The Tropenmuseum is a museum about people, housed in an impressive listed building overlooking Amsterdam's Oosterpark. The extensive permanent display and regularly changing exhibitions feature objects that all have a story to tell about humankind. Stories about universal human themes like mourning, celebration, ornamentation, prayer, conflict. From Africa to West and Southeast Asia, from New Guinea to Latin America: come to the Tropenmuseum and discover that, despite cultural differences, we are all essentially the same.

This museum may take a little effort to visit - although it is easily reached by the #10 Tram. The focus here is on other cultures and areas of the world developed by Dutch traders. Plan to spend time here - and definitely visit the cafe for super-good treats.

Was downright fantastic and amazing. It's a beautiful building and they made a great museum out of it. I like stairs and going around with a lot of change. Also great after a mushroom based meal. Probably even better.

I know this museum for about 50 years of my life. Always amazed when visiting as a boy by all it's display of the Dutch colonial history. With that memory I went back some 10 years ago and was very pleasant surprised by it's modernization and opening up to more area's of the world. We visited again a few times,... More

The building itself makes you open your eyes wide! Recently refurbished, the Tropen is spacious with beautifully displayed artifacts. It includes worldwide cultures with informative display boards. Good idea to take your own headphones and then you can enjoy the music area without having to pay extra. Enjoyed the Buddha display but would have liked to know where the many... More

Unbelievable. Opens only at 10:00. No possibility to reach the restaurant from the main entrance. You have to pay for ticket. Or go round the building. Answer from staff was not the most diplomatic. Then in restaurant surprise .... vending machine is out of order. Since when? Still out of order??? Wanted to see the Pacific department (Only) Museum sooooo... More

Large, well organized museum. This museum tells the story of the Dutch East Trading company and the history of the wealth of Amsterdam. An excellent way to learn some history of the many places the Dutch 'did business' with. Not very crowded, has a small cafe.

One of three museums housing the collection of the historic Tropenmuseum. This museum has changing exhibitions and a permanent collection which covers the history of Dutch Colonialism, ethnography, and currently has an nice exhibition on the life of Budha.

There was an exhibition regarding Buddhism which I was a little sceptical about in the beginning but rather enjoyed and learned a few things. The museum itself is spacious with lots to see, especially if you like music and can see examples of the different styles of music. The restaurant had great food especially the Goat Cheese Salad which I... More
