We might well have missed this if it wasn't on our I AM AMSTERDAM ticket( travel and attractions purchased at Central Station) . This is a small but insightful museum, imaginatively presented to introduce visitors to Amsterdam and its canals - not overly detailed or tedious, and not very time consuming - but enlightening as to how the city and... The design and presentation of this museum made this an unexpected highlight of our trip to Amsterdam. It is full of clever and creative features that I have never seen before and which fit very well with the information presented.

Well worth starting here before visiting other canal related sights eg merchants houses, houseboat museum, cruise, Rembrandt house etc. It gives a comprehensive overview of the history and development of the city and canals through a range of medium. For once the computer graphics all work well! The staff were very competent and keen to explain and answer questions. Free... More

The pictures provided by others say what sort of experience this is. I would just like to add due to the great staff they make you feel special. You can tell they love their job. OK for us it was quite quiet but I bet everyone even on busy days get great service. Nowhere else will you get an experience... More

Nearly walked past the building until we spotted the sign. Gorgeous building and the staff were really friendly. Was expecting a normal museum but what there is is a lot better. The audio-tour that you get is fantastic. Most of the exhibits are very interactive and you learn a lot about the canals and how they built the houses alongside.... More

My wife and I both enjoyed our visit to Het Grachtenhuis. Perhaps not the most in-depth history lesson but worthwhile nonetheless.

This museum suggests presenting a lot of information about the typical houses along the Amsterdam canal ring but it is not much. Especially if you know the city , even a little there is not a lot of (new) information. The Amsterdam Museum hass more to offer and the same ca be said for traditional houses that are turned into... We live on a canal boat in England and so we thought it would be cool to go to a museum about the canals of Amsterdam during our stay there. It wasn't exactly what wed expected it but it was interesting, informative and enjoyable nonetheless. It was an amazing building and I was really pleased to get to see inside... More
