Fantastic (non-big-box) little sophisticated shopping district

Cool stores and vintage shopping, but prices are steep, and the cold rainy november day was not a time of the year to do this. This is a spring/summer activity.

Filled with cafe, independent shops for clothes, decor, shoes, jeans, grocery, etc. Very easy to walk through in a less commercial setting then other central shopping streets. Many local brands and upscale shops, along with mid/lower end places as well. No shortage of spots, of high or low, to stop for a drink/snack. Very clean and upscale feeling

De Negen Straatjes (The nine streets) is a very delightful area to stroll through, get some coffee, shop or window shop and even have a dinner. There are many interesting shops to visit and you can exit to other interesting points in almost any direction.

These streets are nice for tourists and there are some nice small shops, but there are also many overpriced bad shops here. Its crowded and no longer a hidden gem because of that. Nice to see, but not special enough.

As an Amsterdam local, I can honestly say this is the nicest and most picturesque part of Amsterdam, tucked away in its (UNESCO World Heritage) Canal Ring, offering many nice and intimate places to eat and drink, amidst many art galleries and boutique shops. And despite the scenic setting, it's not even that touristy, which makes it attractive for locals... More

In the negen straatjes you can scroll around and find atypical goods from the past or new nostalgic adaptations, from leggings in all colours and design, vinyl music LP, spectacles, antique (modern and new), art, etc. You turn around and around.

Best place (together with the near by Jordaan district) to get the look and feel of old Amsterdam. Still lively and vibrant as people still work (small shops, restaurants and cefees) and live there.

It is a lively street, full of shops and restaurants of varied nature, but do be aware of pick pockets, especially when your tacking a photo. This really is a 'melting pot' (the meaning of the word Amsterdam...) of a street, and is a one minute walk from the train station. Walk up it to the flower and plant market... More

Staying in Canal Ring (Grachtengordel)

Neighbourhood Profile
Canal Ring (Grachtengordel)
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is as historically significant as it is perennially popular. Whether you’re a history buff, architecture enthusiast, shutterbug, or fashionista, odds are you’ll find the Amsterdam you're looking for while roaming around the Grachtengordel (Canal Ring). A brilliant place to get lost in a moody meander and a key component to any sightseeing trip to Amsterdam, this area's major draws include the Anne Frank House, the Bloemenmarkt floating flower market, an enviable assortment of independent boutiques along De Negen Straatjes, and of course all of Grachtengordel’s lovely canals and bridges.
