The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Museum Quarter (Museumkwartier)
Top sites to see in this attractive and affluent part of town include the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum, to name but two of the highly acclaimed museums of the aptly named Museum Quarter. And if you need a break from all the fantastic art, there’s the Neoclassical Concertgebouw music hall and Vondelpark, the city’s largest park. Shopaholics and luxury brand connoisseurs will love exploring the high-end shopping destinations of PC Hooftstraat, Van Baerlestraat, Cornelis Schuytstraat, and Jacob Obrechtstraat, where even the shop window displays are of museum quality. In the evenings, when the museums close and the daytrippers head home, the area becomes a quiet oasis of calm with a sophisticated and urbane tone.

    Cool Museum
This was a very interesting museum. I am not much of an art person but found it interesting with my knowledge of Van Gogh. I would recommend stopping by while you are in Amsterdam. I did the museum in about two hours with no audio guide. There are enough plaques and readings if you don't want the audio guide.
Thank you for the positive recommendation!

    Comprehensive collection
If you like the art of Van Gogh- make sure not to miss this museum. It has probably the most complete collection of this Dutch painter, including some of his most famous pieces of art (sunflowers, alond blossoms, self portraits, the potato eaters...). Presented in a fresh, modern way. Audio guide tours are available. Make sure to book your ticket and timeslot ahead via the museum’s website because this museum is usually fully booked for several days in advance, even during off-season.
Thank you for the positive recommendation!

    Fantastic and well organized museum
I love impressionist art and especially Van Gogh so I expected to love the museum. But there were a few things which I really appreciated about this place. One is that the curation and signage was excellent (English & Dutch). Even though I read the book with Vincent's letters to Theo years ago, I learned a lot more about Vincent's life in this museum. The collection of works is large and includes many other artists than Van Gogh. And there was a fabulous temporary exhibit of Gustave Klimt while I was there. This was a big bonus that I did not have to pay extra for.
Thank you for the positive recommendation!

    A must see…
Amongst the many museums located in Amsterdam, this one in particular I knew was a must see. Such a story this man come from. The museum highlights both his highs and lows extremely well. I highly recommend making a ticket reservation purchase in advance. I also recommend only arriving 5-10 min before your scheduled time. Every floor gave representation of Van Gogh in a different part of his life. You can opt to purchase audio for the museum if you’d like a detailed description. I chose to walk and absorb the environment, paintings and history. My ticket also included the Golden Boy exhibit which is set to be completed in early January. Overall, I had an enjoyable time and highly recommend if in Amsterdam.

Well curated and displayed...an excellent museum
The Van Gogh Museum is really an excellent museum. The pieces are well displayed and well explained (in multiple languages). The flow throughout the museum is good, so even in front of the most famous pieces, the crowds are not too terrible. Several pieces of advise. First, most definitely purchase tickets in advance...if you think you're just going to arrive and walk in, you are sadly mistaken. Second, get a guide of some sort...either audio or one in person. But there are so many pieces that unless you know Van Gogh exceptionally well, you will be overwhelmed. And finally, having listen to many, many American tourists ask, remember this...."Starry Night" is NOT at the Van Gogh Museum, so don't be disappointed.
Thank you for the positive recommendation!

    We had a great time!
Definitely take the audio guide, if you go there. It was very helpful! We were also lucky to get to see the temporary exhibition of Gustav Klimt ( included in the ticket price). Definitely book your tickets in advance!
Thank you for your elaborate and positive feedback, we hope to see you again sometime!

    Perfect experience
Perfect experience. We didn't wait at all in a line (maybe because it was December before noon but still). The staff was really kind and friendly. The museum is very well designed: it has a very logical flow and wholesome composition, we had plenty of space and time in front of each painting (even the most famous ones). The ground floor offers general introduction to the life and art of Van Gogh and the next floors represent different period of his life and art development. The museum gives a great overview of his life, work and inspiration. It futures also pieces of art by fellow artists who influenced him. The Gustav Klimt exhibition was spectacular. We could see aspects of his life, work and influence that are less known (such as his landscape paintings) as well as his art inspired by Van Gogh. Also the recreation of the Secession Building and the Beethoven Frieze was spectacular. Tips: 1.Buy tickets online and come on time for your booked slot: even in the less busy periods, there are a lot of people, tickets are sold out months in advance and queues can be huge. 2.Plan 2-3 hours for the visit (we spent almost 6 but the Gustav Klimt exhibition was amazing and I am huge fan of both). 3.Get the audio guide: great user design, completing information to the one in the museum, interactive elements. 4. Leave your camera in the locker and perceive the paintings with your direct senses. 5. Don't rush to the most famous paintings. Pay attention to the ones that you know less about and try to discover new aspects. 6. Try to go with an unbiased mind: the commercialized image of the mad self- taught genius with one ear who died unknown is prevailing nowadays but there is way more to his art than this.
Thank you for your elaborate and positive feedback, we hope to welcome you again in the future!

    I took a Virtual tour ;-)
I took a Virtual tour ;-) Van Gogh is the painter whose masterpiece "The Starry Nights" has enchanted people for centuries. When I started this virtual tour of the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands, I wanted to get a glimpse into this artist's life because I was familiar with both his works and his depressive episodes, particularly the one where he cut off his ear. This tour provided me with that opportunity and more. Along with his letters, the museum also has a collection of 200 of his paintings and 500 of his drawings. As soon as we walk into the museum, we notice a collection of self portraits by Van Gogh on the 0 Floor. Observing these works—including one in which he is painting and another with a pipe and straw hat—seems to show how the artist saw himself as a person with aspirations to leave his mark on the world. The use of colour and depicting nature have always been Van Gogh's trademarks, but in his paintings Tree roots, Wild roses, Garden with Butterflies, and Emperor Moth, I saw a contented man who had a deep love and understanding of nature. The museum's first and fourth floors feature a permanent collection of Van Gogh's artwork, while the second floor displays some studio practice. Based on the name, I assumed that they were either works that he started but never finished or were displayed after refining. The museum also has a collection of some works by Japanese and French artists, among which is "The Funeral with Umbrella," a painting depicting rain pouring down on a funeral procession that made me feel awestruck. My desire to visit this museum increased significantly after this virtual tour, rather than quenching it. At the conclusion of the tour, I added it to my lifetime travel bucket list.
Thank you for your elaborate and positive feedback, we hope to welcome you again in the future!

The Van Gogh Museum is great for art-lovers, however it can become a little bit boring after a while I found. Often got told you wasn’t allowed to take pictures, and also have to pay for the headphone tour.

The museum presented a great chronicle of artists work and life. I t is best to have times tickets. It wasn't overcrowded but there were enough people for a Thursday afternoon in November.

A wonderful chance to see the brilliance of one of the world’s most renowned artist. It just felt like it missed a certain cherry on top.

I love Van Gogh and was expecting so much more.
There's not even references to his other works around the world.
The museum closes too early. I couldn't even see the temporary exhibition.
Shop prices are absurd.

This was a wonderful museum! Make sure you book well in advance. They have limited admission and it is by appointment. If you wait until the few days before you will likely be out of luck.

Make sure you pay the fee for the multimedia player. Well worth the few euros.

Third trip here, and all have focused on a different aspect of Van Gogh's life. We really enjoyed our visit, got here early in the morning and while the museum was busy, it was easy to spend the time to stop and enjoy each of the paintings as we went through the museum. Enjoyed the special display of some of the few Van Gogh works that were on loan from private collections. Find a way to purchase a ticket, you will not be dissappointed.

we visited but came away feeling very disappointed. there was no pattern or structure to how people moved around the gallery and this made it feel like a bit of a free for all. lots of his major works were not visible due to being on loan to other galleries. had we known this we would not have visited.

Absolutely loved this museum, my sister and I got absorbed in it for hours. I didn’t know a huge amount about Van Gogh beforehand but by the end of our tour I felt like I had learned a huge amount. We found it very emotional learning about his mental health issues and loved how the museum didn’t shy away from this. Amazed also by how many paintings he had done and there were other artists’ paintings also on display which we hadn’t expected.
We had a light lunch in the cafe which was very good. The shops had lovely things to buy and I felt more inclined to purchase after doing the whole audio tour. Loved the fact that the lockers were free of charge & all the hangers for coats. It was pouring rain while we were there and we left our umbrella in the stand to dry and it was still there 4 hours later. A fantastic experience.
