Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

My husband was tempted to buy some bulbs, but I am glad that I was able to talk him out of it after reading the recent reviews. They do stock the shelves with lots of souvenirs and fake bright tulips! It is a colorful, bustling market, and I hope to return when it is filled with real flowers!!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 November 2023
- Erika El MadiQuincy, Massachusetts59 contributionsTouristy, but cute.We wandered through here after going to Blue Amsterdam and it was very cute. On a touristy scale, this is a 9/10. Lots of souvenirs! Note, if returning to the US, the Tulip bulbs sold here do not have USDA certification so can't be brought back into the US and will be confiscated. I chose to buy some flower seeds instead but they didn't have any tulip seeds, only bulbs. Overall, as a tourist, I found it very cute and the shops full of blooms was so fun to see.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 March 2024
- Journey387098452491 contributionDeceived by picturesBought some individual bulbs last autumn. Do not rely much on the images. The tulips are now in full bloom and none of them is the sort I was buying according to the pictures. Still beautiful, but not the ones I wanted. Buy original packages instead of loose bulbs.Visited August 2023Travelled soloWritten 23 March 2024
- Ferenc MUnited Kingdom1,104 contributionsLovely market..and the bulbs we got were greatLovely flower market right by the canal. Masses of stalls to pick from to buy bulbs and three packets for 10 euros and they were all good. Yes it is a bit touristy but that doesn't mean it isn't nice.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 April 2024
- Ryan B29 contributionsLots of nice shops, not that many flowers. This long run of floating shops is always ranked highly in the Amsterdam guides. Overall it is nice and worth checking out. Each shop is pretty small and there is a range of things to buy across all of them-they are by no means clones of each other. As you walk along the rows of shops there are buildings on the other side of the narrow walkway that also have a lot of tourist souvenirs and a few places to eat and drink. When we went in April pretty much every shop was selling flower bulbs, only a few had cut flowers for sale. There was quite a lot of tourist souvenirs--playing cards, snow globes. It was nice to see but we walked down it one way then came back down the other side and in total we took 2 hours and for me that was very much enough time to see it all.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 April 2024

It was not in our plane to visit it and we just passed by and stopover. We found that the flower market was really organized and excellent although most flower stalls were selling the same things. So the most popular things to buy from here are souvenirs and flower seeds. We didn't buy any flower seeds as we can't bring them back. So we only bought some souvenirs. We found the stall at one of the corners selling souvenirs at a very cheap price. Maybe it was the cheapest we found in Amsterdam. If you thinking to buy any keychains or fridge magnets or others may consider to go there.

I have ridden my bike through this Floating flower market over the years mucho times . This markets atmosphere represents Amsterdam the real way it is .Of course most of its bulbs dont ever grow or their Seeds dont ever bloom in your garden .But this little street has some unique Suveniors and Christmas ornaments with fun t -shirt stores . I still have some of my shirts from 20 years ago with Crazy characters on them and fun pictures too .Amsterdam has become exstremly over touristed to death over the last 10 years where the Locals have even wished all this would end soon . I can remember my early years here in the 1980's and 1990's when i enjoyed this Wonderful City of Rembrandt and VanGogh with its Weed Coffee shops and used bike stores and quaint One star hotels with a breakfast in the mornings . Sure the Closing down of everything has changed this 17 century city to turn it back to when it was fun to ride my bike at 3. 30 am around the streets in March when my hands would stick to the handle bars from the frost . That is Amsterdam i know .

I'm surprised that so many foreign visitors expect to find an "authentic" experience at the Amsterdam Bloemenmarkt. It has always been a tourist haunt, ever since I can remember (I'm 50 now). No local will ever buy their flowers from this place!
What you can expect: condescending sellers, who are plying their stuff, which mainly consist of cheap souvenirs, overpriced bulbs and flowers. They think that you're dumb enough to fall for them. With "you" I mean especially American, Russian or Asian tourists (who tend to have rose-tinted views of Europe as a huge outdoor museum spot).

Disappointing, not worth the walk. Penned as the largest floating flower market. This means some decking on the river to extend the square footage of a market stall. All stalls sell the same things, check them all out as prices differ. Mainly sell tulip bulbs to tourists. Some other bulbs and plants available. All of the stalls sell typical tourist tat, fridge magnets clogs etc. Will take you less than 30 mins to look around.

Vendors sell pretty much the same bulbs, wooden tulips, and touristy magnets at every shop, although some offer nicer packaging than others. It’s a quick stop if you are planning to send home typical Amsterdam trinkets, but prices can be a lot better in other places. If you simply want fresh flowers for your room during your stay, stop at the local Spar supermarket and get tulips half the price of the “floating” market ones. As you stroll through this one-block floating market, it won’t appear floating at all, since the vendors’ shops open street side. Not worth a trip there unless it’s on your way.

The market is fun to walk through but you need to understand that because this is a tourist area they don’t expect you to remember which bulbs you bought once you get them home, wait months to have them grow and then remember where you bought them. I was so excited for the ice team tulips as the bulbs I’d bought at home had been killed off in a deep freeze while I was container growing them. I was thrilled to find them at Tulips and more, 614 Singel, so I bought and planted them. I paid extra for the bulbs with the Canada export certificate and as you can see, instead of I e cream, frilly pink parrot and purple/blue tulips I have yellow, pink and what will be orange. In the photo I planted the blue bulbs in the back as they were supposed to be the tallest, the pink in the middle and the ice cream at the front as they were the shortest….I’m sure I’m not the only one. If you are happy just to say you have tulips from Amsterdam it is fine but if you are hoping for a specific variety don’t waste your money here.

Situated along a gracht the flower market is on a long and narrow pedestrian walkway. There is a huge selection of flowers and you wouldn't believe how cheap the flowers are there, it is worth buying some, great colors and smell. Also for all hobby gardeners there is a huge selection of seeds and pods.
I wouldn't say the flower market is a destination in itself but if you come across it then worth roaming by.

I visited here upon arrival as I didn’t want to book anything important my first day. It’s a long street with stalls selling various souvenirs, flowers and flower bulbs on one side and shops and restaurants on the other side. I bought a small bouquet of wooden tulips at the first stall I stopped at, only to realize that all the other stalls carried that exact same item and some at a lower price. Most of the stalls are selling the exact same thing, so walk around and check prices before you buy anything. Overall this was a bit of a let down and I wouldn’t recommend going out of my way to visit here, but if you’re passing through, it might be worth a quick look.

We visited in March. Very touristy - seemed to be mostly what you'd see in your local garden centre but we spent 55 euros on bulbs that we thought were a bit different - something we haven't seen or could buy at home. Unfortunately, I'd say only a third of what we bought have actually come up. We bought black tulips which turned out to be red, and I bought a Venus flytrap, in a sealed tin, which has turned out to be a bunch of wild flowers. I wish I had seen the bad reviews of this place first because it certainly does appear to be a scam. You've fooled me once, but it won't happen again.

Hi, I am going to Amsterdam in early may and have a walking tour booked in the morning and was planning to go to Bloemenmarkt at around 3pm. Is that too late, will there still be flowers to see?

I’ m planning to travel to there in late January. Are the flowers still deserve to have a look or not?
Written 18 December 2018
We found the flower market to have fresh cut flowers but also bulb plants that are unusual and difficult to find here in the USA! I saw bulbs that are not available in catalogs or online. But buyer beware of bulbs sold in bulk (bags with mostly moss/ mulch) and unable to see the condition or number of bulbs. Enjoy your time at the market but if you are not into tourist merchandise you may want to skip.

Written 18 August 2018
Most of the bulb sellers will advertise parameters but if u buy tulip bulbs in the market be prepared for them to come up red regardless of what colour u order!
