My friends were visiting me in Amsterdam and choose to leave their bags here on the last day as they had to check out of their hotel but their flight wasn’t till later that day. We decided to collect the bags before going on a canal boat which we booked for nearly €20 a head. When we got to the shop there was lots of people waiting outside to return bikes but couldn’t as the shop was locked up. There was a small handwritten sign in the door window saying “back in 15 minutes” My friends were told they could collect their bags anytime until 6pm. We waited for over 40minutes when the shop manager came strolling towards us. When we said we had been waiting way more than 15 minutes and he’s cost us nearly €60 as we have missed our boat(never mind the extra cost of the bags being inside longer as they charge by the min) he just laughed!!! Unprofessional, unreliable and rude attitude from this guy was unreal. He literally didn’t care at all. He said something about collecting a bike but had no bike with him?? Also when we actually got the bags he said “oh you have bags, I’m a bike guy, I don’t do bags” LOL Well you done bags when you took them and said come back anytime to collect them before 6pm??? This company needs to own up to not providing the service they advertised and refund us the €60 for the boat trips they cost us. It’s 100% your fault we missed our boat. Not the boat company and not ours. There is loads of other bike rentals and bad drop services in the centre of Amsterdam. Don’t use this one!

I had a flat back tire and Mac Bikes repaired this in the first place. However, four days later I had a flat back tire again. It turnes out, I paid for a service that I didn't receive and therefore my tire broke again. I went back to the store and they told me that it's gonna cost another €40 - no discussion possible.

On top of that, they were very rude and had a very unpleasant attitude towards me.

I would definitely not recommend Mac Bikes.

We left our luggage at Macbike through LuggageHero. We were told we could collect at any time before 6pm. Without warning, the shop was closed and we had no access to our luggage and passports. This meant we missed our boat and lost €58. When we spoke to the guy working there about it he didn’t seem to care about our predicament at all. He told us we weren’t thinking about him and the bad day he was having! There was no awareness at all that there were a large group of customers (both luggage and bike) that had been locked out of the shop to wait in the cold. Avoid.

We have just been to Mac bikes right next to the central station and the 2 staff on duty, a man and a girl were extremely rude. First we asked about renting a bike and he "joked" he only rented boats there not bikes... At first I thought he was kind of kidding only but no, not at all. I asked about the services and he said I could go online and see it and even completed his sentence by saying "it's on the poster outside the store go online and check it". We wanted to rent the bike at that moment but since we stopped into the store (we're 2 girls) he gave us no chance to rent or even ask, his position as well as his colleague was the same and they started laughing out loud when we left the store.
We have never seen such awful behavior in our lives, it's really unacceptable and other employees may have see what a scene was.

As a visitor I want to be treated straight and am sick of extra unexpected mark ups. This happened twice on my recent visit with MacBikes.Firstly busy Cental Station shop has a good stock but not one of the cheaper no-gear bicycle, presumably in the expectation that we will bite the bullet for the 50% more expensive one with gears. Really irritated, I hiked my bags to their other store. When hiring I was asked if I wanted insurance and I expressly said NO but the next morning when I returned the €15 insurance premium had mysteriously been added to my bill. The outright rude assistant insisted I pay because my signature was on the agreement and only after a stand off did he take it off. I am forgiving of mistakes but when I get rudeness rather than a clear apology I suspect that the mistake is deliberate. Throughout Amsterdam (as in many overtouristed places) I encountered "mistakes" that always added extras to my bill until I challenged them.
Macbikes and stores well located but I want to flag up these isssues for other users-
And hey Macbikes if you dont like getting a terrible score:
1. Stock the bikes you offer on the website
2. If adding insurance double check that the customer can see that when they sign off on the contract.
3. Make good service central (the appropriate response should always be to say "so sorry, we made a mistake, of course we will take it off").

Hello George, Sorry to hear you had a bad experience at one of our shops. It's true that we are limited to handbrake bikes at our location Central Station North. The reason for this is that the handbrakes are our most requested bikes. Our shop there is unfortunately too small to stock the cheaper pedal brakes, as we already have to carry two different frame sizes to accommodate our customers. We apologise for the miscommunication regarding the insurance. In no way is it company policy to charge customers for services they don't request. The insurance we offer is always only optional. The insurance however, is €3,50 per day for a bike, and not the €15,- you stated, so could you please contact us to relaties@macbike.nl so we can work this out. Hope to hear from you soon, Macbike

Whent there on Sunday 6 April 2014 the ladies seemed so nice at first, still they wanted a deposit of €50, which seemed quite to much! But me and my friends where ok with it. The bikes where to big for us especially for one of my friends which is shorter then us, the lady attending to us lost immediately her patients and started patronising her, I mean we are not to blame for not being freakishly tall! Like the locals!!! Anyway she told us that we should not rent a bike cos
we don't know how to ride a bike and the bikes she was suggesting for us were already kids size, and was bombarding my friend non stop. And for a €27 a day was not worth the abuse! Luckily we left and found a much cheaper and mor understanding bike renal for about €14 for 24hrs including endurance , and its just a €20 deposit, and gave a nice bike to my friend with a cute ring bell (thay have good sense of humour) and are quite nice. The place is in damstraat just By Rene's croissanterie. It's called, rent a bike. And I'd recommend you go there if you want to be treated the right way!!!! Hope this will help!

Beware of this place. We went there to get a bike, as the name of this shop was all over the place. As we got there, we were the only ones asking questions. We discovered that although they give you the option to pay an insurance, they tell you that if something happens to the bike, you will have to pay for it even if you have the insurance! So the insurance is technically just to fool tourists and get some extra money.

Then, something else happened. In the meanwhile they were taking the print of our credit card number and processing the papers, and signing them by one of us, we got unhappy with the insurance condition and with the treatment we received, so we decided not to take the bikes.

We asked for the contract the we have just signed back and the print of the credit card but they REFUSED to give them back to us. We asked for a paper saying that we eventually did not take a bike, although we signed the papers. They refused to give us that either. Eventually they said that they had thrown the contract and the copy of our credit card in the garbage. We insisted on having them and they threw on us the GARBAGE CAN!!!! Yes, believe it or not, they did that.
We went to the police, and they were nice enough to accompany us to get our papers back. We did eventually get them but we lost precious time of our vacations. Nevertheless, we are happy that we have done it.
Try to avoid this company for your own sake. May be nothing would happen and you will enjoy your bike ride, but why taking a chance. There are so many bike companies around the city.

We were so looking forward to seeing the city by bike and as we were staying near MacBike we just went for the easy option. It was ok, nothing wrong with the bikes themselves but the service was pretty miserable.
No advice on where to go, no explaining of the rules of the road/pavements/cycle paths which get very busy! and an extremely grumpy greeting when we returned the bikes (even though we had not run over our time or bumped the bikes etc) I would certainly look around if renting bikes in Amsterdam and stay away from here if you're looking for friendly service and advice before cycling into the busy streets!

The bikes are ok quality, you can get the same anywhere else, and probably better prices. They have such rude staff. We had initially asked for basic bikes for 1 day rental. We got the bikes and went on our way. When returning the bikes it turned out that they had been out of the basic ones, so they had given us more expensive bikes, which they had not informed us of. So now we are up 5 eur more in price per bike. We made a comment that they should have told us this, because we had asked for the basic kind. Instead of an apology and an excuse to make the situtation better, the keeper got really agressive; claiming we were accused of trying to cheat them out of the extra money, rolling his eyes, and almost started shouting at us in the store. It felt like getting as much money as possible was way more important than satifying their clients.Never going there again and will not recommend it to anyone else.

I went to the Overtoom location. I asked for a bike without gears since it was a bit cheaper. The man behind the counter asked if I wanted insurance. I said no, but he added it anyway because he said I took too long to answer. I asked if he could remove it.

When I returned the bike the next day another man was there, he charged me extra for having a bike with gears, and for insurance. I could see he had the original receipt with a lower price, but he had crossed it out. Also, I had a second bike to return since my friend had injured herself and was unable to return it and this man tried to stall me so I would have to pay a late free. Truly unpleasant hustlers. Avoid this location.
