The Oude Kerk is the oldest building in Amsterdam and is located in the famous historic centre of Amsterdam; the red light district. The Oude Kerk creates in its programs connections between heritage and art, past and present, and provides opportunity for contemplation and wonder. The church shows art projects that fit the cultural and historical value of the Oude Kerk and which strengthen the current art supply. The old church works extensively with national and international partners.

We came here with our iAmsterdam 72 hour City Card however it had expired about 30-60 minutes before we arrived here and the woman wouldn't let us in, wow, it wouldn't have hurt to let us off after we'd spent a fortune in their city boosting their economy. From what we could see in the crack in the door, it... More

We stopped by as had read about it in other areas and wanted to have a quick look whilst we were in the area. Entry is included with the I Amsterdam card so it was worth popping in. Areas of the church are stunning and there is a lot of history there. A modern art exhibition was also going on... More

Very old and beautiful Church at the very centre of this amazing city. The Church is huge and beautiful, gives a great glimpse of the history. Rembrandt's beloved wife Saskia is buried here, there is a staircase to heaven, huge altar and much more to see. There was an modern art exhibition going on if you would be interested in.

This site was a great visit although we had to pass multiple coffee shops near the red light district to reach the church. Very interesting history on the building and its past- very cool inside so dress warm or bring a jacket. My 15 year old daughter was bored after a few minutes. If you chose the audio guide option... The old church wasn't on our main attraction list, but having seen a lot of advertising for the Marinus Boezem exhibition, we thought it was worth a visit. The church is incomplete in its fittings so that's the first unusual aspect. There are some spectacular aspects to it and our thoughts were that it was a fantastic venue for an... More

The church itself is quite beautiful, but what sold us was the ongoing art exhibit. It includes some installation pieces, the most interesting of which is a scissor lift that brought us up, one at a time, within a few meters of the high ceiling. The unique perspective the exhibit gave of this holy site was a once in a... More

So you can only pay with card no cash is accepted. We were 100% going into the church until we found this out. The couple in front of us complained, but then paid on card. We did an about turn. I can accept the future of money is clearly going to be cards rather than cash. However I would expect... More

This church is beautiful in its own right, but with the current modern art exhibition inside, it is utterly stunning. Right in the heart of the red light district and free with I Amsterdam card. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because of the freezing temperature inside. This can't be helped I guess, but wrap up... More

Spent an hour or so in this beautiful old church. So much detail. Total bonus that we got to the place to ourselves to wander, take pictures & soak up the magnitude of the place.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
