Having knelt by the shoes on the Danube knowing they were there and I navigated to see them, this I accidentally stumbled across. I noticed the sign on the bridge first, then walking along the canal the plaques appear one after the other. Each depicts the people forced from their own homes across the water. It is a very subtle very understated reminder of a terrible time in our history. As you read each name you look across the canal at the homes they were forced from. It is a place to stop and pause and deserves to be seen and people remembered.

Exiting the Amstelhof (Hermitage museum grounds) through the main metal gate, I accidentally stumbled upon these plaquettes mounted along the Nieuwe Keizersgracht quay. No words can express the horror the people must have felt when being forced out of their homes, visible on the other side of the canal, directly across from the plaquettes. One can walk all the way from the Weesperstraat to the Amstel, or the other way around, and match names with stately canal houses.

A sobering moment to witness how citizens, civilians, neighbors, friends can be pulled to their ultimate doom from their homes by "legal" forces bent on their destruction. Why? Can it happen again?

Worth a stop at to look. Its sad to read the names of the house's occupants and the same date for each when they died. You can imagine how it must have felt to leave the houses opposite. Poignant and simple.

De Schaduwkade ( Shadow Wall) is a monument in the form of plaques displayed on the canal wall of "Nieuwe Keizersgracht". The plaques with the names of some residents that were murdered during the WW2 along this canal because they were Jewish. How many times I passed this canal on my bikes without notice it. This is a place where you should give a moment to stand still. On the information board you can see the houses of those people accross the water.
