Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. With the well-connected Centraal Station as Centrum’s base, it's easy to travel farther afield via one of the city’s iconic trams.

The picture of the IAmsterdam visitor centre would lead you to believe it is outside the front of Centraal station. Indeed, it used to be there adjacent to the travel centre.

It's now moved and is within the bustling centraal station on the other side of the station close to the ferry terminal.

It is quite useful for tourist information. They managed to give me handy information on a couple of museums I wanted to visit. They also sell plenty of Amsterdam and Dutch souvenirs so it's worth checking out upon your arrival in the city and again on your departure before you head for your exit destination.

It was useful to buy an I Amsterdam card. However we bought digital versions of the card for multiple users and the system would only allow us to put the card on one person's phone - so it is better to buy cards individually to allow each person to have their own card and travel independently. When we emailed the customer service about this we didn't get a reply.

Also please note that you have to book entry times for the Van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum even if you have an I Amsterdam card.

Completely unhelpful regarding tickets to Van Gogh museum. I can understand an exhibition been sold out, but a museum for the whole weekend, simply rediculous. I come to Amsterdam to go to the Van Gogh museum. Thanks for ruining my birthday weekend

I Amsterdam has several offices, including this one outside the city's Central Station. I stopped here upon arrival, after having already purchased an I Amsterdam card for my four day stay. I wanted to get some additional tourist information. I Amsterdam is a major tourist company in the city. You can purchase cards for a varying number of days that get you into a whole host of tourist sights for free or at a discount. The card also includes free use of public transportation. The is a good value if your visiting a lot of tourist sights as well as using the various modes of transportation. The staff manning the offices are friendly, helpful and professional. There's offices in the train station and airport as well.

The tourist information centre is located right opposite central station and if it's your fist time to the city and good place to stop to get info on things to do or tours. Maps are €2.50, but we got a free one at the hotel and also used google maps on the phone which was easier.

These visitor centers are very helpful. Buy a city card and a regional card and you can really do everything and go everywhere! Metro, train, tram and bus.

Right across from the Amsterdam Centraal station is all the information you need to enjoy the city. There are a variety of tours that you can take. I had taken the canal tour many years ago with lunch (very civilized), but since it has been many years since I visited the city, I just did the self-guided walking tour. There's an excellent outdoor restaurant in front of the Niewmarkt castle.
