Neighbourhood: Centrum
Amsterdam’s buzzing hub, with its sprawling network of tram rails and a seemingly constant flow of tourists and commuters, yields convenient access to some of the best sightseeing, shopping, and street life in Europe. Closest at hand are the Royal Palace, the quaint shops of Haalremmerdijk, the pedestrianized zones Kalverstraat and Dam Square with popular neighborhoods such as the Red Light District, and the Canal Ring hardly more than a moment’s stroll away. Discovered the monument and statue taking a Free Walking Tours of Amsterdam general city tour. The tour was amazing and the location of this statue is beautiful view of typical Amsterdam. The story behind such a man was very interesting also.

Stumbled on this statue when strolling around Waterlooplein market. The coat of the philosopher were marked curiously with parrots and other birds. There is a geometric solid lying close to the statue. There are chairs nearby to enjoy the scenic view of Amstel river and canal houses. Rembrandt museum is only a quick stroll from here. The Waterlooplein market is also few steps away.

This monument stands in tribute to Baruch Spinoza, the 17th century Amsterdam. An early thinker during the Enlightenment. Considered one of the great rationalists of the time, he is known for his ideas about freedom of expression, tolerance and freedom of religion.

The monument features a stone platform, on which stands a bronze sculpture of Spinoza and next to him an icosahedron of polished granite. The sculpture of Spinoza is fairly simple showing the head and face of Spinoza, while the rest of his body is fully covered with a cloak. The cloak has patterns of parakeets and roses symbolising the multiculturalism of Dutch society and a reference to Spinoza which means thorn in Portuguese.

The Spinoza Monument is located at Zwanenburgwal near City Hall. Here you find a sculpture of the Jewish born philosopher who was born nearby this location in the 17th century.

The statue is the work of Dutch sculptor Nicolas Dings (2008). What you see is a bronze of Spinoza in a cloak, which includes parakeets from far away places mixed with native sparrows. The intermingling of birds symbolises multicultural society of Amsterdam. The statue stands upon a terrazzo platform with an engraving of his name.

There is an information plaque nearby with information related to Spinoza as well as this monument. This is worth a brief reading when viewing.

Beautiful statue to pay a homage to one of the greatest Philosophers of the History. Baruch Spinoza helped humankind to think in a deeper way about our own existence.

Not for everyone, but if you enjoy Spinoza's ethics or the interesting history of rationalism, it is a nice little pilgrimage. Very nice canal views all around, too.

We came upon this historical monument dedicated to Baruch Benedictus Spinoza. He was a Dutch Philosopher with a Jewish background who had strong views on freedom. Probably best known for the statement “The purpose of the state is freedom.” Now that’s relevant in any time in history.
