About
Prepare your visit: Go to the Google Play Store/Apple Store and download the IZI.TRAVEL app. Open the izi.TRAVEL app en click on the compass button on the lower left side of your screen. Type in 'Aalsmeer' via the search bar and open the Royal FloraHolland audiotour. Have fun! Our location at Aalsmeer is the largest trading centre for plants and flowers in the world. And it's just a stone's throw from Schiphol airport. The earlier you get here, the more you see. From the Visitor Centre, walk across a gallery through the auction complex. At the end of the gallery, you'll arrive at the auction halls where you'll see the flowers come before the auction clock. As you walk around, you'll find information panels which explain - in four languages - the auction process and the activities you'll be watching. There's no need to sign up for this tour in advance. You can also explore the auction with a professional guide. Reservation on the website, extra charge.

Bring back the pablic auction!!! I was at the Flora Holland couple of years ago, it was so much fun to see the real auction, and got an explanation on the spot, but now all I saw was flowers moved from one place to another. When I asked about it, at the reception, I was told it cost too much money to keep the auction at the spot, so they decided to do it only through the internet. I wish I knew, so I won't woke up early in the morning and drag my gusset with me.
In addition I paid 10 Euros per ticket, even though in the website it supposed to cost 7.5 Euros only...

The good news is that it is worth spending a 1/2 hours watching the movement of flowers around in the world's biggest flower market, the bad news is that you need to get there early. We arrived at 7.15am and it was very lively, but by 8.30am there was visibly less action. You can pay E10 Euros to enter (which includes the opportunities to take photos and videos of you allegedly amongst the flowers and driving trollies) or E22 for a Combo ticket which includes entry to the Historic Garden and a Boat Ride in Aalsmeer itself. Don't bother about the combo. Firstly, you need to take 2 buses and a walk to get to the village. Secondly, it is not well signposted when you get to the village. Thirdly, the historic garden is like a tatty garden centre with rows of runner beans, tomatoes etc. Fourthly, the boat trip only took place at 1.30pm and 3.00pm, was not in English and was so crowded that if anyone else turned up they would have had to have waited for the late tour.

We had a great time visiting the flower auction. You can see the old clock (via which they sold the flowers) and even play a trading game yourself. It’s impressive to see the logistics behind the flowers we buy in the supermarket or flower shop. Of course there also is an option to buy some souvenirs with tulips etc on them.

I have never seen so many flowers in one place, and as a florist I thought I was rather immune to the wow factor of flowers. My husband and I toured Royal FloraHolland as individuals. We like to intently study situations on our own, and look at private stand-a-lone tours as part of the fun of traveling.

I image group tours or someone leading you through the flower market might provide more ease of information, but they introduced us to a phone app which explained things as we walked along. (It is rather noisy in the market, and my phone was difficult to hear, so we relied on written signs for information.) For those adventurous individuals, there are two parking lots, one close to the visitor entrance and another on the roof of the building much further away.

The self-guided tour is along a elevated walkway over the flower market, so you can stand and watch all the action of flowers being transported to your heart's desire. Nobody hurried us along. It is important to arrive early as the flower buyers at the auction arrive, bid and depart before many arise in the morning.

I enjoyed seeing all of the flowers. My husband was most interested in the transportation system and how they keep track of all of them in this fast moving operation.

Actually, I don't know what we expected. I think we thought we would be on the sidelines observing an enormous flower auction. Instead, we walked on a "sky-bridge" above a ceaseless movement of large carts of flowers, all of the same type from place to place in a gigantic building. My wife wrote in her journal: "It was interesting but pretty much the same activity--moving flowers around on the floor." I wrote, "We walked along upper level overlooking floor covered with people on carts pulling loads of fresh flowers. There was no auction going on that we could see. Impressive but hard to make sense of." At one point, I became fascinated by all the signs above us in different languages and took lots of pictures of those. If you want to visit a gigantic "warehouse" with a floor covered by "trailers" packed with flowers of every description, then this is the place to come.

Whenever you are near Amsterdam and love flowers, this place is a MUST SEE destination. At this largest flower auction in the world you see millions of flowers being traded via the Dutch Auction system. Come early as flowers arrive from all over Holland and the rest of the world, are bought and shipped again all over Europe by truck and all over the rest of the world by plane. Flowers of every kind from orchids to roses and every flower you can imagine.
