A magnificent cathedral unlike anything one might expect to see in the Netherlands. Besides a superb interior, the east end of the exterior is so peaceful. We went back multiple times.

The greatness and splendour of the cathedral was marred by unfriendly reception and lack of information.

I had visited the cathedral and was apparently too late (though the doors were open and other people strolled in behind me). This triggered a janitor who took it upon himself to expel me in an aggressive and uncharacteristically unchristian way, which naturally frightened me and in that shock, froze, thinking he might physically assault me. I continued to scream and shout, claimed I had downs syndrome (or some other mental illness- in Dutch) and when I attempte to make a formal complaint, I was not given the opportunity, the man claiming that the church was his.

The whole experience sheds light on the lack of preparedness for corona as well as international tourists and frankly it defeats the purpose of such a beautiful structure.

Sadenned guest.

This enormous gothic cathedral is so beautiful outside and inside that it is “must visit” place. On one side it is located by a square and on the other by one of the main streets with shops.

This cathedral is unique in the Netherlands, as its gothic style architecture shows a more southern influence. In contrast to the austere Protestant north, churches in the former duchy of Brabant are more expressive and exuberant in appearance. Most of them are in present-day Belgium like the ones in Antwerp dedicated to Mary, Leuven and Mechelen. Even today the people's culture in the south of the Netherlands is more similar to that of Flanders (and other Dutch speaking parts of Belgium).

I was struck by the worship of the 'Zoete Moeder' in one of the chapels. Ordinary Catholic people still go here to pray and convey wishes or thanks to Mary. Just imagine, centuries after the successful conquest of Den Bosch by 'de Staatsen' (Protestant army) led by Frederik Hendrik in 1629 (turning point in the war against Spain).

This grand and hugely impressive cathedral has the largest tower of a Catholic church in The Netherlands. Not only did we walk the incredible length of the church, but we also climbed the bell tower on a guided tour which was terrific. We learnt about the historic significance of Sint-Janskathedraal throughout the years, how music is played before the hour is marked by the ringing of the bells and why the organ found here is one the most important pieces of instrument in the whole of The Netherlands!

Went to see the church on a spur of a moment decision while we had to kill time. It’s beautiful and majestic inside.

Very interesting tour. It is quite a climb but it is rewarded with a good explanation of the bells an its programmed bell sequence.
Beautiful view over the city

One of two cathedrals in the world that has these statues on the arches, the only one where the statues look up. If you are lucky and they have the roof open in summer, do it. It is truly a sight to behold. The interior is richly decorated and the windows are breathtaking. The entrance from the market has a window that has a panel dedicated to WWII, enter and look back and up. The Maria chapel is still heavily used, with various saints along the walls. Have a look at the wood engravings all along the sides.
