Currently the old church is decorated with work by Rosângela Rennó: Encounters | Encontros. As a result, the entrance fee has been increased from €5 to €8 euros. The church itself is an imposing, beautiful old building with a rich history.
As an 'artistic' aspect, carpeting has been laid over large parts of the floor. Without the material used but also that the authentic floor is thus hidden from view. Rosangela's 'artworks' are too sad for words and not even worth the extra €3. Really a waste of time.

Breda is one of the older Dutch towns with a lovely old center, with some interesting momuments such as the begijnhof, the watergates, the military academy and the big old church (Grote Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk). This is one of around 10 old Dutch churches that is really worth to visit. What is nice about this church is the decorated organ, the partly painted ceiling and the various grave monuments of which the ones of Engelbrecht 1 and 2 of Nassau really stand out!, you won't see many of these in The Netherlands or anywhere else.

What also is nice is the Prinseschapel with the painting of Jan van Scorel.

Like many of the Dutch Churches nowadays this one is also no longer used as a church, but instead it is used for exhibitions, fairs or concerts.

For those who want to visit an admittance fee needs to be paid, but it is worth it!. Also check out which day the tower is open, because on those days you will have a great view on the old town.

On a list of world churches this one ranks high, but not near the top. It is beautiful and well worth visiting. Very beautiful on the outside, but a little disappointing on the inside. Don't get me wrong, if you are close please visit this church.

Breda was a frontier city in the struggle against 16th century Spanish domination. The Nassau family was in a key position in the fighting and needed God's blessing. This protestant church was instrumental in bringing about spiritual backing. The people of Brabant however remained catholic and never converted to the ideology of the struggle, though many elements of protestantism were incorporated in the regional soul. The industrious work-ethic, but also saving instead of spending and striving for good craftmanship and quality. Taking this into account the beautiful Gothic church is not out of place in Breda.

Free entry.

Breda is a very small place but full of spirit, i stayed with some friends there and the guided my visit starting in downtown, across the park and the chatedral, then at night the took me to a "bar tour" you can catch all types of enviroments, since the pub to the chic one. the beer is around 1 ans 2.5 euros. so is not a that expensive if you´re not a big drinker.

I have visited many churches/cathedrals all over Europe and this church certainly looks equally impressive from the outside, but it does not compare to others I have seen on the inside. It is basically free but there is a 1 Euro donation suggested.

Unfortunately I was not in town on a Thursday, Saturday, or Sunday so I was not able to climb the tower and see the spectacular view of the Breda city center (2 Euro fee). I am sure I would have rated this higher if that had been an option. It would be nice if they offered this daily. Breda is such a beautiful city that it would be fun to see it from this vantage point.

There is an area in one section of the church to light prayer candles, but no place nearby to sit or kneel to pray. Cost is 50 Euro Cents donation per candle.

The staff was friendly and seemed helpful.

The church does have nice clean restrooms which was much appreciated after walking around the area. I think it was 20 Euro cents donation to use the facilities.

The Grote Kerk has some interesting tombs and a small bit of artwork, but nothing overly impressive.

I have to say that it is worth a visit, especially if you can take a tour and climb the tower; however, in my opinion, the beauty of the outside did not match the sparseness of the interior and I was underwhelmed.

The Grote Kerk (Large Church) or Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady) is in the centre of the old part of town. The church was originally a Catholic church turned Protestant in the 17th century, like so many churches in The Netherlands.

The outside is impressive with a tall tower that can be seen from afar. The interior like all Protestant churches has sober decorations.

There is free admission but a donation of €1 (or more) is suggested.

The church is very much linked to the House of Nassau which delivered William of Orange who started the liberation of The Netherlands from Spanish Rule in the 16th century

The Prince’s chapel in the church is the old mausoleum of the House of Orange-Nassau, ancestors of the present Dutch Royal Family. Seventeen family members are buried in this chapel.

William of Orange and other family members of the House of Orange-Nassau are buried in the New Church in Delft.
