There are beautiful old buildings, shops and restaurants in the city centre. They are mentioned on a free map of the city. You will also find great street art and you should definitely look for the miniature people that are placed around the centre (look online for the locations or buy a map). We liked the city a lot!

Very nice town! I liked the historical view of this town. It's very different of Rotterdam, but had some same architecture as Amsterdam

The city center along the canals has an excellent ambiance. There are lots of nice shops, cafe's and restaurants. Many of them have heated terraces. The range of products is very varied and include many tasty regional products. A good place to spend a morning of even a day strolling around.

If you visit The Netherlands and you 'd like to stay away from the middle of the road crowd, go Leeuwarden. Only an hour and a half drive, over the famous Afsluitdijk. Just walk the canals, vist one of the musea or a gallery, have a drink in a venue, do some shopping (vinyl recordstores at the Voorstreek!), or have a picnic in the scenric park the Prinsentuin. From the Abe Bonnema building on a clear day you can see the Waddenzee and its islands

The old inner city of Leeuwarden is a prime example of an attractive Dutch city thriving in the Golden Age, with a few historical canals still in place. It is a very lively destination for shopping, museums and also nightlife. The largely renovated huge central Wilhelmina plein is attractive and houses the brand new Frisian museum. Parking is dead easy in the Zaailand garage which is straight beneath the Wilhelminaplein - Google Maps takes you there no problem.

Leeuwarden has a beautiful compact old citycentre with buildingds datin from the 17th and 18th century. The centre has a few canals where you can go on your own boat or on a canal tour. On the sunny side of the Nieuwstad there a a lot of terraces where you can enjoy the vieuw on the canal and the historic houses on the other side. You have to see the Waag, the building where cheese and butter was brought to be weight, now a restaurant, the lean tower of the Oldehove, the C16th centrury Cancelary, the Art Nouveau Pharmacy at the Voorstreek and don't forget het Blokhuis, the former prison, now a culttural centre with a library that is worth a visit, the old cells now occupied by artisans and their workshops. Just roam the narrow streets of the old Jewish quarter. Visit the Grote kerk, often open in the summermonths when you als0can clim the old lean tower De Oldehove. (closed in wintertime. There are plenty of opportunities to get a guided tour but the canal tour gives you a different look.
