About
De Oldehove is an unfinished church tower in the medieval centre of the Dutch city of Leeuwarden. It leans more than the tower of Pisa in Italy. Open for visits from mid April till end of October.

Mid 1500s an attempt to build a huge tower in the Frisian capital failed. All what is left, is a robust, but leaning structure. Like in Pisa, the foundation in soft sediment proved to be not good enough.

City planners did a good job in integrating the historic tower in the new square set up. The ensemble (city hall, visitor center, tower, statue, trees) looks fine.

This very beautiful, old tower is quite leaning, but that also gives it an extra charm. In 1595 the accompanying church collapsed, since then the tower stands alone. When the tower was only ten meters high it already started to subside! The tower can be visited with a local guide.

The town planners have created a large open square in front of the Old Tower which makes it easy to see how much it leans. One can visit inside and climb to the top. The square is on the edge of Leeuwarden and is a short walk to other attractions.

Though not as attractive of the tower of Pisa, Oldehove is an interesting place with a history. The circular climb up the tower is worth the view one gets from the top.

Interesting story behind how the tower came to existence as Tilted Tower! It is standing at the Nice open space of open Theatre. A historical treasure of Leeuwarden.

We had come from Australia and had a schedule and were hoping to go up the Oldehove and take lots of pics of the view. However, we were very disappointed to arrive at 10:00am and see that it only opens at 1:00pm for a few hours. We couldn't hang around as we had to go to Sneek for a lunch with family. It was still amazing to see it and take pics of the outside, its impressive!

Originally intendevto becomebthe highest church tower in the Neterlands, the builders soon experiences the difference in the undeground; part soft, part solid. Almost from the beginning the tower startec to tilt. The architect tried to adapt the construction, but to no avail. The tower never became higher than 70 meters and wS not integrated in the church. Well worth climbing though for the view!

Nice view over Leeuwarden from old tower. Refreshing, up in the air with this amazing landscape.
Once down again don't forget to look for Het Gitaarthuis in town. A very nice atelier with paintings and guitars and a great host. The adres is Herenwaltje 10

De Oldehove can be termed 'The leaning tower of Leeuwarden'. The tower, though not spectacular, is still quite an interesting site to see. I believe you have the option of getting to the top for a small fee. Worth a visit if in the area.
