The Fries Museum is dedicated to Friesland and the Frisian people. Its activities revolve around the eleven cities that make up the province and the surrounding countryside. These include the Frisians' love-hate relationship with water, the search for what defines the typical Frisian character, and Friesland's place in the wider world. The freedom fighter Grutte Pier's sword; old costumes and clothing; treasures from the Frisian mounds; the legacy of Mata Hari, the exotic dancer who was executed as a spy at the end of the First World War; Gerrit Benner's paintings; contemporary visual art; and the film de Overval: together these objects tell the story of Friesland.

I was expecting an older building with some paintings, sculptures and a small collection of local historical artifacts. Instead, it's a beautiful building that is very well worth exploring, Quirky? A few of the touch-screen driven systems seemed to function in mysterious ways. Also unexpectedly...More

This is a beautiful museum, and at €12 not too expensive. The building and exhibition are well designed and I learnt quite a bit about Mata Hari, chintz, dykes and the resistance. However the room which is designed to give you an introduction to Friesland...More

Went on a saturday. Nice and interesting museum, a few different exhibits. We were mostly interested in the WW2 part, which unfortunately was in Dutch only... Anyway, worth a visit. Took us around an hour.

The museum itself is modern with interesting exhibitions. But all the information is in Dutch, so did not really get a lot out of it.

Recommend it even if you are with children. Museum is quite big, so take your time. Personally I would have expected a bit more history than art.

The museum is really state-of-the-art, it looks great. For such a huge buildings, it doesn't take that long to see all the exhibitions, but they are pretty interesting. The exhibition about Mata Hari was disappointing, as it was rather small. However, the exhibition related to...More
