The museum, unassuming from the outside, is great for its archaeological section. It often holds, also, top-quality temporary exhibitions, such as the current one showcasing the Peredvizhniki Russian Realism movement. The latter is impressively set up in the airy new wing, with a very good curation of selected works, its sub-thematic organization, and its modular organization that allows one to... More

When you visit Assen, you should definitely visit this museum. It´s very interesting. A few years ago the Terracotta Army was in the museum, this was really interesting. Right now you can watch Russian Realism, so I think I need to visit again :)

The Drents museum in Assen has been renovated. In my opnion it is not too easy to find the different exhibitions. The elevators are slow, but yes, it is an attractive museum with sometimes exceptional exhibitions such as the Peredvizhniki Russian painters exhibition. A unique event. The Museum is nicely located mid town close to the train station.. Nice surroundings... More

We went over to view the Russian art exhibition. I was a bit skeptical at first but it turned out the paintings were great and showed in great detail the life of Russians who lived around 1900. It is a free entry with a Museumkaart. Highly recommended!

A very interesting collection of paintings by Russian artists of 1870s. Thoughtful subjects, lot of emotions, great impressions. Worth to travel even from Amsterdam (about 180 km).

They just had a temporary exhibition about the Maya, which I missed unfortunately. But I read somewhere that you should defintely visit the archeological department/floor of this museum and that is certainly true ! There have been great finds in this area of Holland, very old finds of objects, dwellings, animals and human remains. The walls have panels with finds... More

Great exposition about Maya culture with lots of artifacts, video and explanation. Building itself is quite interesting as well.

Nice exhibition about the Maya life and culture. Some beautiful relics, unfortunately no important pieces. So, on to Guatemala yourself.

The main exhibit was a history of the Mayan civilization. It was very well done. The permanent exhibits were interesting especially the one about the history of the area.
