I went here for two reasons - first, I wanted to eat something and have a quiet place to work, and second, I was curious to see the historic ambiente of the surrealists. Both aims were fulfilled perfectly by Cabaret Voltaire. First, it's an impressive place, full of history and full of modern art, as well - when I went there was an exhibition asking you, the visitor, to compose a poem based on your experience and to publicly perform it.. Second, I got a big table in a corner and could sit and work along, while people were coming in and out. Really a special place, go visit!

One of my favourite bands borrowed their name from this place so was always going to visit it. Really cool place and relaxed atmosphere. Some guy gave an impromptu set on the piano - even God save the Queen on request! I think they have live events so check website. Don't have the absinthe - still can't see straight!

As I said in my review of the Lenin apartment, Zurich's importance on the world's stage has ebbed and flowed but during WWI, it was the most important neutral city. Here citizens of warring nations could freely mingle and search and debate solutions. One of those places again on Spiegelgasse is Cabaret Voltaire. Some of that open, artsy residue is still here and you can visit to see first hand. We simply had the opportunity to walk by and see the exterior.

The opening hours here are telling: Tuesday-Sunday 5.30pm- midnight. So if you're expecting a museum to the Dadaist movement, this isn't it. What it is, however, is the actual Cabaret Voltaire building, restored as a trendy bar with a performance/exhibition area behind. I did order a 'Dada Sour' absinthe cocktail from the bar - a bit over-priced for what it was, but perfectly pleasant and sat for a while and sipped it, soaking up the atmosphere....which the place does have.

Arrived for the absinthe, but upstairs appeared to be a beer / pub. At least, that's what I saw everyone ordering. The absinthe was behind the bar, but no real help with our order. Staff seemed awfully inexperienced - didn't have the ambience we expected. Was hoping for more typical 'absinthe bar' feel - and some suggestions. Left quickly.
