The crypt is where the saints Regula and Felix would have been beheaded. The water church has an older part and is strange because of the mix of two very different architectural styles. Interesting Giacometti artworks in a very modern church. You might make a short visit, as it is close to the other two important churches in Zurich (Fraumünster and Grossmünster).

This is the oldest church in Zurich. It is not very large and is currently used for a variety of events. Next to the river, hence its name.

This twin tower church is located close to Grossmunster on the Limmat River. The architecture around the church is interesting and unique. Certainly worth visiting.

A lovely little church situated on the side of the river much in the shadow of grossmunster - the ‘twin towers’ church not far above.

This church was a positive surprise. Today, it is part of the same building as the Helmhaus museum. The church has mosaics by Augusto Giacometti and displays showing the history of the church.

The land that the Water Church is built on was originally an island in the Limmat River where the Romans executed prisoners. Legend has it that the city saints Felix and Regula, members of the Christian Legion that was to be decimated, were beheaded on the island with their servant and all 3 picked up their own heads and walked up the hill where the Grossmunster is today and fell in the location where they were buried. You can visit the crypt today and see the stone that was used in the beheading. The church building completely covered the island. During the Reformation, the protestants saw this church as so associated with the saints and the Catholics, that they decommissioned it and used it for storage of all relics that had to be remove to reform the church. After a long time and many different storage uses, the church was reconsecrated. In order to bring some ornamentation to the reconsecrated church Giacometti was hired to create 3 stained glass windows and they were beautiful. They add considerable color to an otherwise very bland church. For me, the history and the beautiful windows make this church a must see attraction for Zurich

once this was a little island in the river, before they enlarged the road and linked the island to the mainland. the church is an important place for the history of the city, and in the underground you can visit some of the oldest walls.

A relatively small size church with very interesting long history located at the Limmat riverside. The site was previously on the island of Limmat River before connected with the right bank of the river and become part of the main land of the river bank. The first original church was built in 10th century and gone through several modifications and reconstruction until 15th century and famous for the reform movement of the church that separated this church completely from Roman Catholic Church. Then this building became general function public building including as Library and University before restored to its current church function. The statue of Ulrich Zwingli as the reform lead is shown at the rear outside of this church. This church is approximately located in the mid position between Grossmunster and Fraumunster, two of the four main churches in Zurich. One of the significant features of this church is its very simple and minimalist ornaments and interior of this church, as the contrast with Catholic Churches with plenty of ornaments and statues inside of them. The priest when we visited this church was very friendly and explains a lot of the church history and present condition.

This stands in stark contrast to, for example, the ornate Catholic churches of Europe. It really is worth a visit to see the understated beauty of the interior.

If you want to tour Zurich's historic churches, start in the middle with the Wasserkirche or "Water Church," which was originally on an island in the Limmat River that has now been connected to the eastern bank. The Wasserkirche is smaller and plainer than the nearby Grossmunster, Fraumunster, and St. Peter's, so it can illustrate some basic principles of Romanesque and Gothic design for you before you go see the other churches, which have varied these principles in different ways. The church offers a helpful brochure explaining the stages of its construction in the different styles. The Giacometti windows are a highlight, as is the crypt below. And in general, it's a hushed and intimate space for meditation or just rest in the middle of an active day.
