The Schober was always a place I wanted to show my guests from out of town. Unfortunately this time was a disappointing experience.
We were walking around the old town and I hoped that I could have a snack in the Schober back garden. To my surprise, the garden was cordoned off. The front garden was serviced but only 2 small tables were taken, the other tables and chairs were folded up and could not be used.
Other guests wanted to go to the back garden, too, but they were not let out. We had to sit inside on a nice September afternoon. It was raining, yes, but only much later in the afternoon.
There was no rational reason behind it, there was enough staff.
The staff behaved in an incredibly unprofessional and I-don't-care way.
What has become of this landmark in the old town? The food was excellent, as in the old days, but one wants to feel welcome, no?

The food is really good, especially the famous Apfel Strudel. The coffee is great too. The staff is a big disappointment - during one visit they left us waiting in line for at least 10 min, though they were passing by constantly. It was definitely a mood killer.
The other time I was there with my relative and the waitress was very unfriendly. I ordered the apple pie with whipped cream, ice cream and vanilla sauce to which she raised her eyebrows and mentioned they each come with additional price (which I already knew). Her general attitude was cold and disagreeable. She wasn’t checking on us during the whole visit too.
Such a pity, because the café is really beautiful but the staff kind of spoils the entire experience.

We arrived shortly after 6:30 PM on our last evening in Zurich. The staff was closing shop and they indicated they closed even though the posted hours were 7 PM. I was crushed and the staff said that we could come back tomorrow, but as we were leaving the next day, it was now or never! The staff person, which seemed to be in charge said that she could make us a hot chocolate to go. She was so nice and didn’t even seemed to mind doing it! It was delicious!

What a beautiful place for a hot chocolate! There were a lot of people around and everyone was expressing how great the hot chocolate was. Not cheap, but worth it for a real treat.

This cafe is one with tradition. Café Schober is there since the 1800s and as a visitor you can feel the tradition and passion that went into the place over time.

We were greeted very friendly and were given the choice on which of the three individually decorated floors we would like to sit on. We chose the top floor which has rather the traditional cafe house style from past centuries.

The service was very friendly and fast and our waiter answered all our questions. I wanted some cake and the easiest way was to ask our waiter for the table number, go downstairs and pick the cake I wanted. They are preparing it and bringing it up to the table. I went for an apple strudel which was delicious! I loved the fact that they have a ton of filling in it and thin and crispy dough covering it. I will definitely come back for it one day. The other guests of my party had hot chocolate (praised as very good as well) and also a filled croissant that was freshly prepared as well.

All in all we had a very good visit and even though the cafe was quite busy they kept the pace with their service. I will be coming back.

A very cozy place in the old town of Zurich. It's actually THE oldest coffee house in Zurich . Being there feels like being in a fairy tale. The hot chocolate can "wow" you and the service is amazing!

If you are looking to nice place to seat, drink a tasty coffee and eat something sweet - choose this place. Cakes are delicious. There are tables outside you may watch the people passing by but its not at the street - it a little square. Very nice.

We had coffee and cake there today 27.2. Our waiter was obviously very new. His supervisor, instead of supporting him told him off for not cleaning up, never picked up a dish, nor took our order. What disdain for us customers and snobbery towards his inexperienced colleague. I cannot recommend this place, there are many wonderful cafes in Zürich. Go elsewhere.

The Schober Cafe is a classic. Pretty building, hundreds of years old, with charming atmosphere, great pastries and hot chocolate. Usually crowded and often a waiting que......but it is well worth the wait. I never visit Zurich without a visit to this very special cafe in the old town section. Yum......recommended !
