The museum is huge that's why it makes it kind of confusing walking through.
The English descriptions aren't as detailed as the German ones. Also there aren't many historical facts in the descriptions

I found this museum very striking and exciting. A large collection of nice artwork from all over the world. If you love checking out art from everywhere this is a must see of collections from Africa, the Americas, Oceania and Asia.
There is also a little shop to buy souvenirs on site and a cafe for tea and snacks.
Easy to get to by tram and bus.

A superb museum on a high hill in a lovely park, where local children were happily sledding when I arrived (January 2010). The museum displays beautiful art objects from China, Japan, the Congo, Angola, Gabon, Cameroon, Guinea, Nigeria, India, Pakistan, Liberia, and Mali. I happily spent five house there. The foot of the hill (and the entrance to the park) is right by the Rietberg stop of tram line #7.

I have been in this museum already 3 times, unfortunately these people still do not understand that tourists and foreigners need to read some English as well.
Unlike other museums in Zurich this is very conservative and nothing is ever translated in French, English or Italian, I am not going back unless I first learn some German.

A gorgeous park with rolling lawns, sculpture and fountains reveals a refurbished villa and a modern museum building housing Asian, Indian, North American, South American Art. Beautiful musical instruments, and special exhibitions as well. The Reitburg is a jewel box museum with powerful art in a charming setting. Worth a trip when in Zurich. Easy to reach by way of the #7 tram.

We really enjoyed this museum and it really had some amazing exhibits! I've never seen so many well preserved ancient artefacts in one place. Some exhibits were millions of years old!
Amazingly it was actually free. I'd read up on prices etc before we went and was a little confused as some reports said it was free while others quoted a price. This is because there is a small exhibition within the museum which you have to pay for and it did seem as if the staff weren't bothering to point out to people that this was optional, just saying the price. We decided not to bother with it and were very glad of our decision as there was so much else to see we honestly wouldn't have had time.
If you are only visiting for a short time I would highly recommend seeing this Museum and the Zoo - the best two attractions in Zurich.

The Rietberg is a wonderful museum that has one of the BEST collections of Chinese ceramics in the world. From neolithic pots to Tang camels, this is an absolute treasure trove of masterworks, all elegantly displayed in a way that gives every piece room to breathe and places them in interesting figurative juxtapositions. The breadth and depth of the Rietberg's Chinese works achieves its superlative quality because of the recent generous gift of the extensive Meiyintang Collection, which was one of the most significant of its kind in private hands.
There is also a fabulous Shiva Nataraja and and some other notable Chola bronzes. There is also a delightful cafe and a lovely park location to add to the overall aesthetic experience.

If you want to visit a museum that gives you glimpses of cultures from around the world, check out the Rietberg. Between its permanent collection and its special shows, it often has exhibits showcasing works from several continents. In each case, the well-curated displays offer a lot of context and perspective -- not just about the artwork itself, but about the culture that it comes from.
When we visited, we saw an outstanding African bead exhibit and a wonderful display of Swiss ceremonial masks. Both shows included fascinating information about the places where the works came from and the history and sociology that influenced the artists who made them.
Since we visited on a drizzly day, we didn't take full advantage of strolling around the grounds. But even on our short walks, it was clear that the park surrounding the museum is lovely and elegant, with gently winding paths and lots of unusual trees and shrubs.
Finally, a tip: since there isn't parking at the museum, plan to take public transit there instead.
The Rietberg is in a residential part of Zurich away from many other sights. But it's well worth visiting, enjoying the lovely grounds, and sampling the well-done galleries.

This is one of Europe's hidden gems. Hidden, it has to be said, partly through its own fault. I talked to people who live in Zurich who did not even know about it and it is not well advertised or signposted. But it is really worth finding. The collection of early Chinese ceramics alone is stunning -- most of the pieces would be in any national museum that could get hold of them. But there are also fabulous collections of Japanese, pre-Columbian, Indian and African art. The displays are excellent, with labels in English as well as German and the design of the buildings (linking a new extension with a 19th century villa) is very pleasant to move around. The scale overall is ideal -- a good morning or afternoon with lunch in the cafe is perfect.

The museum is divided in the new building see in in the photo, and a nineteenth century villa once inhabited by Richard Wagner. It is set in a magnificent park with intermittent views over the lake. The contents are magnificent, depending on your interests. I found the Chinese section stunningly beautiful and educational. There is also a remarkable shaman's coat from Siberia, and much more. This museum specialises in non-European art. It has a lovely café too with friendly service. A short and pleasant tram ride away from the city centre.

Hello I'm going to spend 2 days in Zurich: First day Rietberg museum, second day Eutliberg. Apart from that, just to stroll around and get to know the city. Can anyone recommend if - for this plan - it's worth buying the ZurichCard or not ? Thank you very much

I may not have time to visit the museum during visiting hours. Could I still walk in the park between 8 am and 9:30 am? Thanks
