Best part of zermatt is that no vehicles are allowed there , all are parked 12 kms before station at Tasch and walking around streets and looking at buildings is experience of life time . Best trip ever

Arrived at Zermatt by the Glacier Express (which was breathtakingly wonderful). Settled in to accommodation for 2 nights. The town is quite lovely and incudes the amazing Hinterdorfstrasse. This is the old part and heart of Zermatt, showcasing the ancient barns, homes and sheds, dating back from 1600 to 1800's. Place it on your 'must visit' list, along with visiting the Matterhorn. Travelled by 'cog train' arriving at the peak next to the Matterhorn..wow, a perfect sunny day with the best view. Very magical and highly recommended - also 'must do'.

Well preserved historical old homes on “stilts”, very interesting to look at. Easy access walking from the main street in Zermatt and it’s free!

This is the old part of the town of Zermatt and is well worth a visit at the top of the high street. The barns, stores, stables and old houses were built between the 16th and 18th-centuries. Many of the buildings sit on 'mushrooms' which prevent mice and rats getting into them. They could get up the 'stems' but not on top of the mushroom itself.

Not being a skier this was the first time I have visited a town like this and was very impressed indeed. Once you get over the prices of things you can appreciate the beauty in history around and no one demonstrates it better than this lovely Street.

The buildings have stood the test of time brilliantly and have real character and individuality.

How some of them are still standing is a mystery but they are and they mate for beautiful viewing and photo opportunities.

You’re already walking around Zermatt so find a few minutes to wander around this area. You will not be disappointed. These buildings are beautiful and amazing to see. You’ll get a visual idea of how things used to be.

We explored Zermatt’s Old Village (old wooden Swiss buildings) while out walking around (located behind the Old Church). There are more than 30 buildings constructed in the traditional style of the barns and stores of the upper Valais, Switzerland. We found the most fascinating thing to be that many of these structures sit on flat stone slabs balanced on poles. We had to Google this to see why…it was to keep mice out.

Just steps away from the main street in Zermatt and near the church and museum in the heart of Zermatt is Hinterdorfstrasse with its unique old homes, barns and sheds. These beautiful old wooden homes have all the character that one can imagine and these homes date back to the 1600 to 1800's; all are in protective status so any changes or remodeling is strictly enforced and must be completed accordingly to the code for the area. The houses are a mixture of residences or homes that can be rented for vacation; many have been renovated inside with all the modern conveniences however the exterior cannot be changed and any updates is heavily scrutinized and regulated. Some of the storage sheds are up on stilts which back in the time kept out all the rodents and other unwanted guests for the food that was stored in some of these elevated sheds. When we wandered down the street and the nearby streets, there were not too many tourists so you almost had the place to your self without all the hustle of the main street. Being surrounded by these old structures and observing the different characteristics of each home transports you back in time; it is easy to imagine how village life was back several hundred years ago. Very unique and one of the highlights of our visit to Zermatt.
