Great experience on the England coast to coast trip. Our guides, Jen and Marieke were outstanding. Full of information, funny, sincere about getting to know everyone in the group. Made the best of some rainy weather and were always there if we were lagging behind or there to lend a hand while crossing a stream. They were a great team. The hiking was difficult at times, but worth our efforts. The views were amazing. The hotels fantastic, especially the ones with spas and our dinner delicious. A unique, fun experience. Did not realize that England had so much to offer.

Where to start. There is enough documented about the majesty and beauty of hiking the Tour De Mont Blanc. Our pictures and memories are awesome. We capped it with para-gliding over Chamonix up to the glacier - Definitely something you should add.

Our tour guide Marieke from Alpenwild made the trip. We were 3 couples hiking together with our guide, a perfect size “team”. First, the company handled all of the details with ease - hotels, meals, moving bags, and logistics. Marieke was fun, engaging, pushing, encouraging, and laughing the the whole time making for a very fun trip. The best part was her ability to flex to some of our crazy ideas. She was able to get a yoga instructor on our rest day to stretch out. She handled a sick day for 2 of our hikers making sure they were cared for. Deviated from restaurant plans when we got tired of the top chef meals. And arranged paragliding on the last day. Her knowledge of the mountain, businesses, routes, and people made it one of the best guided trips I’ve been on.

Alpenwild St Moritz to Chiavenna,Italy. Another amazing Alpenwild hike led by the guide team of Louis and Sophie. This is the second hiking trip with Alpenwild and it won’t be our last. Louis and Sophie did a great job of planning this new trip. The scenery, the accommodations, the cuisine from breakfast, picnic lunches, and selected suppers all complimented the on-site tour leadership. Whether it was sunny or rainy we saw special Alps scenery in the valleys or mountain tops. The group of hikers also contributed to making fond memories that will encourage us to come back again for another Alpenwild hike. Thanks to everyone on the tour for making this hiking tour one we will always remember.

Having just returned from two weeks in Switzerland, including an amazing eight day guided hike with Alpenwild - St.Moritz to Italy - we are so excited to write this review and share our experiences on this multi-faceted journey led by Louis and Sofie, guides extraordinaire. If you are looking for a trek with double digit daily mileage and big elevation gain to maintain your membership in the higher, harder, faster club, this may not be the trip for you. But if you are a seasoned hiker of the Alps looking for something new or a first timer on a guided tour to the Alps, and want something off the beaten path, this trip is special in so many ways.
First, a few introductory words about our trip - St. Moritz to Italy - and our wonderful guides. Alpenwild has done a fantastic job, opening up this region to those of us who were looking for something a bit different, new and special. And, in our opinion, the transformation from being ‘a wonderful hike in the Alps’ to ‘a journey to be remembered for a lifetime’, can be attributed to our guides, Louis and Sofie. They are two of the most delightful people you will ever meet; young, energetic, positive, knowledgeable, inquisitive, friendly and caring are but a few of the words that describe them best. They ‘discovered’ this route and were the perfect pair to guide it. Louis and Sofie have the innate ability to somehow help each hiker walk their own unique path while bringing everyone together for such a rewarding group experience. A few days of hiking with Sofie and Louis and you will feel like you are hiking with old friends. We went to Switzerland to hike and explore Graubunden and we left with new friends and an experience we will remember for a lifetime. If you have a chance to hike with Louis and Sofie, we highly recommend them as guides.
Now, more about the trip. Most Americans have never heard of Graubunden, the Engadine, Val Bregaglia, nor the Romantsch culture and language, never mind the many smaller villages, lakes, passes and trails traveled daily. Sure, the trip starts off in the glitzy winter ski resort of St. Moritz and our time in that town was wonderful. Although, personally, we were happy that Alpenwild chose the lovely Hotel Waldhaus am See, down on beautiful Lake St. Moritz and away from the clatter of the busier St. Moritz Dorf. Over the next week our hikes would take us to the Morteratsch Glacier, along lakes Staz, Silvaplana, Sils, Cavloc, and Lunghin, through the beautiful Val Fex and Val Bregaglia, to the quaint villages of Sils-Maria, Maloja, Solgio, Castasegna, Chiavenna (Italy) and others. Yet somehow, limiting this review to the names of obscure villages, lakes and valleys, as beautiful as they are, would not be doing this trip justice. Each and every day was rich with experiences that filled our senses to the brim. On beautiful mountain days Louis and Sofie would point out the high peaks and regale us with stories of famous mountaineers and their exploits. We explored waterfalls and forests. We learned about Giovanni Segantini, a world renowned painter who loved this region and Friedrich Nietzche, the philosopher who spent much time in Sils-Maria. At other times we would stop to examine beautiful alpine flowers tucked in between rocks in high alpine meadows or discuss geologic formations of serpentine and other rocks. And of course, we would talk about food. This part of Switzerland has a unique culinary tradition. Being the largest but least populated canton of Switzerland, there is plenty of room to support both its vibrant agricultural community and diverse wildlife habitat . The mountains are dotted with small herds of dairy cows, beef cattle, sheep and goats. The abundant wildlife includes deer, chamois and marmot. Each day during our fabulous picnic lunches we would sample different local cheeses, cured meats, and fresh vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Meals of wild boar, venison, lamb, pork, beef, pasta, gnocchetti, rosti and pizzocheri with pesteda seasoning, a local favorite, would await us each evening in the most enchanting village restaurants. The Val Bregaglia, especially Castasegna, is home to the wonderful sweet chestnut. There are flours and pastas made with chestnut. Chestnuts are used in toppings and sauces with all types of entrees. Chestnut (and hazelnut) cake is fabulous, and although we didn’t get to sample one, a seasonal chestnut beer is said to be delightful.
While we could fill another ten pages extolling the virtues of this guided tour – St. Moritz to Italy - we’ll stop here and allow your imagination and own research to complete the picture. Thank you Alpenwild, thank you Louis and Sofie, and thank you to our ten wonderful hiking companions, for an experience that surpassed our expectations. We hope to see you all again!

I lucked out, because a friend couldn't go on this trip so sold me his tour. I had few expectations, as I'd not been on an organized tour before. Wow! I don't know if I ever want to travel without guides again!
From the first day, Sophie and Louie (a couple with more than a decade of leading adventures) shared their excitement about introducing us to one of their favorite regions on Earth, an area of Switzerland called the Engadine valley and Bregalia (that includes parts of Italy). These regions have some of the most beautiful natural features I've ever seen, from glacial peaks to the meadows so green you'd think your eyes were wearing filters.
Empty alpine lakes with a few ducks greeted us, as well as all the flora and fauna we encountered: donkeys, ermine, alpenbunnies, dairy cows, goats, a goat dog, lizards, swallows, slugs and the occasional friendly cat. These animals lived in some of the most natural, beautiful habitats I've ever seen, in meadows filled with diverse greens--in part because farmers were given subsidies based upon the biodiversity of the land, a fact I learned from Sophie, one of many that blew my mind.
Along the way, we learned of historic trade routes, nobles with passion projects, such as building a castle (now a public eco-education site), the proper way to stir molten cheese, and countless other facts about the places we visited and in which we stayed. Highlights included a lavish spread at a local dairy, after an interactive demonstration of cheese-making; an afternoon hike to a glacier where we enjoyed a picnic with the other participants, with whom we became friends; hikes along spruce-lined mountain paths--in sun, clouds and drizzle; mouth-watering meals at mountain inns that we'd never have discovered were it not for Alpenwild; comfortable beds and relaxing spas at historic hotels, that also served spectacular and delicious meals we all shared, with laughter and a sense of how lucky we were; the optional massage, and foot massage, that I enjoyed every time I could; a gondola ride up an alp so steep and deep, some felt relieved we couldn't see the bottom through the clouds; a hike through wind and rain, ending up at a warm mountain hut with hot chocolate and delicious pesto; and did I mention all the food that we ate?...an epicurean dream. I normally don't each much bread, cheese, meat or sweets at home. On this trip, I pulled out all the stops and ordered everything from venison to rabbit, eating cheese and dessert with every meal. Some cheeses and deserts were best in class. My friend Scott and I kept a running list: best lasagne, best venison, best pumpkin soup, best espresso, best chocolate mouse,,... Of course, when all is said and done, it's the experiences that matter, the moments shared.
There might have been a miss or two--the over-cooked, grisly deer shank at a touristy, historic mountaintop restaurant with an incomparable view. Or my own choice to wear a too-permeable windbreaker on a rainy hike during which I learned how uncomfortable it can be when clothes soak through.... Even these few misses just made me appreciate when things went right, which was 96% of the time. I especially appreciated how accommodating Louis and Sophie were when I thought our meeting time was 8:30 am rather than 8:15, or when I peppered them with questions about this or that.
In all, I'm super grateful I went with Alpenwild, and cannot imagine having explored the alps any way. I'll remember the friends I made, the interesting conversations, a refreshing lake swim, the delight of seeing a fellow hiker suddenly surrounded by friendly goats, the laughter on trail and at meals, the smiles when sharing a vista, and even some moments alone with my thoughts. I've returned refreshed, renewed and happy to be home.

We went on Alpenwild's 10-day 'Scenic Alps by Rail Sightseeing Tour', led by our exceptional tour guides Eve and Dave Harpur. The trip started in Lucerne and ended in Zurich. We had first-class tickets on Switzerland's best and most famous railways, including the Bernina route and the Glacier Express. Among the many Swiss towns we visited were: Zermatt, Lucerne, Montreux, Lugano, Gruyeres, St. Moritz, and Grindelwald. We saw snow-capped mountains, glaciers, beautiful meadows and crystal lakes. We saw the Matterhorn, Jung Frau and Lake Geneva. This has to be the most beautiful scenery on earth (and we have been to a LOT of places). Even the weather cooperated with one cloudless day after another.

I cannot say enough good things about Eve & Dave, our tour guides. They knew the train & rail car system thoroughly and made sure we were at the perfect spot at the right time. Always. Eve & Dave were both vaults of information about all things Swiss - and our group wore them out with constant questions. The hotels were wonderful at each location, with excellent food. We thank the Harpurs so much for making this a perfect trip.

This was a trip of a lifetime. Probably the very best vacation we've ever had.

I have just completed the St Moritz to Italy Hike with AlpenWild and I am still soaring from this fantastic adventure! First of all, Louis and Sophie were the consummate guides, anticipating our every need and always remaining flexible to adjust to the circumstances of the day. They packed us delicious picnic lunches from local markets, shared fascinating local history and tidbits, steered us to the best shops and scenic vistas, and led us on the most wondrous and exciting trails. Being introduced to the cuisine and beauty of lesser known villages, such as Soglio and Maloja, was an amazing treat that made us feel like we were experiencing things very few tourists would ever taste. Perhaps even more importantly, Louis and Sophie gave us the encouragement, compassionate understanding, and enthusiasm to propel us to new levels in our ability to hike the breathtaking terrain. I now feel even more motivated to improve my hiking skill and I cannot wait to enjoy more AlpenWild trips. Louis and Sophie are at the absolute highest pinnacle of guiding and if you ever have the opportunity to take a trip with them, do not hesitate for even an instant. They are the best of the best!

My husband and I took the Alpenwild Scenic Alps by Rail tour in September 2023 and were extremely impressed and thrilled with our tour. Our tour guides were Eve & Dave Harpur and they were truly wonderful! As 30+ year Switzerland residents, Eve and Dave are very knowledgeable about all aspects of their country and enthusiastically shared all sorts of interesting information about Switzerland, her people, her traditions, and her mountains! We traveled through the country via trains/gondolas/cable cars/funiculars/boats and even a small amount of time on a coach. Eve and Dave made sure we were logistically where we should be at any specific minute (which was no small feat) and no time was wasted waiting around for the next logistical step. We did have some free time for additional exploration (with options suggested and explained by Eve and Dave based on what specific persons were interested in doing). Our tour was comprised of 14 persons - ranging in age from 40 to 80. We really enjoyed all the participants and although some of us started the tour as strangers, we ended as friends! All the participants were active persons and we were able to move from activity to activity quite quickly. My husband and I have travelled extensively and I think Switzerland is the most beautiful place we have ever visited. We will definitely be back. The Alpenwild Scenic Alps by Rail tour has my highest recommendations ! Thanks forever to Eve and Dave Harpur for sharing their country with us!

P.S. I do have one caution - if you have a fear of heights - Switzerland is not the best country for you to visit (if you intend to go into the Alps)
