The trek from Chamonix to Zermatt on the walker’s Haute Route is a classic adventure for any true hiking enthusiast. I had dreamed of doing it for years, and last month Alpenwild made it a reality for my family. We completed the Deluxe Haute Route in late July 2022. It was stunning, rewarding, fun, exciting—in short, everything a once-in-a-lifetime vacation should be. The trek involved hiking about 100 miles (with about 20,000 feet of elevation gain and loss) over a ten day period. Alpenwild made it extremely user friendly. To begin with, our guide, Cam, was spectacular. His extensive knowledge of the Alps, the trails, the wildflowers, the geology, and the local culture made for some very interesting conversations. Cam made sure that everyone on the trek had a fantastic time. He carefully set a pace for each leg of the trip that everyone in the group could manage without feeling exhausted at the end of the day. He also kept us out of bad weather by timing our routes to avoid getting caught in thunderstorms. We managed to finish the trek without once having to use our rain gear. Cam made lunch an event. He would carry an unbelievable amount of food for us. The first time he started pulling food out of his bag we were stunned. Forget about those spartan meals you've had on hikes that consisted mainly of power bars. Cam would bring fresh bread, meat, local cheeses, three or four kinds of fruit, as many kinds of vegetables, and a slew of gourmet add-ons (tapenade, pesto, duck terrine, fig jam, roasted red peppers, dolmas, well, you get the idea). And then, of course, there was the chocolate. We were, after all, in Switzerland and no meal was complete without three or four different types of chocolate. We generally found that it was difficult to become hungry on this tour. We started the day with an elaborate breakfast buffet at the various hotels, then had a snack about an hour before the massive lunch described above. And then dinner was frequently a three or four course meal at a gourmet restaurant, often with no limit on the amount of food you could order. Do not think that you are going to lose weight on this tour, even with the significant amount of mileage! The fifth day of the trek is a rest day at the magnificent Hotel Bella Tola in Saint-Luc. Alpenwild includes a massage or spa treatment for each guest, but I highly recommend that you take advantage of the optional hike. You have a world class guide at your disposal. Cam took us to an amazing spot that we might not have found on our own that only required about half of a normal day’s effort. The last two days of the tour are in Zermatt. You could go there, and nowhere else, for a hiking vacation and spend weeks on the different trails. The town is extremely charming, with no end to the gourmet restaurants. We spent some of the time exploring a slot canyon and hiking part of the way to the top of the Gornergrat railway, which has excellent views of the Matterhorn. All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend Alpenwild and its Deluxe Haute Route trek to anyone with an interest in hiking, European culture, and gourmet food. You won’t regret it.

We did the Deluxe Bernese Oberland Traverse with Sophi as our guide. It was an amazing trip. Sophi was an excellent guide. She knew the route like the back of her hand, and was very personable and funny. She put a lot of effort in to making us great lunches on the days we ate on the trail. The restaurants were very good to excellent, and the hotels were as well. I would do another trek with Alpenwild without any hesitation.

My wife and I joined the Alpenwild Deluxe Tour du Mont Blanc for an adventure of a lifetime. We had high expectations based on our research and others' reviews. But our experience was beyond what we imagined. 1. Guides: Sophie and Fernando were exceptional - knowledgeable, experienced, encouraging, funny. 2. The meals and accommodations were varied, interesting, and perfect for us. 3. The scenery was gorgeous - 360 beauty around every corner. 4. We enjoyed our group of interesting, gracious, engaging fellow trekkers.
