About
The Matterhorn Museum – Zermatlantis offers insight into the development of Zermatt. It shows the triumph and tragedy surrounding the first ascent of the Matterhorn. Here one is immersed in the mountain world of past generations: One sees how the people lived in Zermatt in the 19th century and shudder at the sight of the broken rope from the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865. Four of the seven climbers lost their lives at that time. And one looks in wonder at “Theo,” the 16th century mercenary who did not succeed in crossing the Theodul Pass.

- permia66,008 contributionsMajestically challengingAn engaging narrative is displayed, with the main attraction being the majestically challenging mountain itself. Formidable obstacles stood in the way of ascending to the pinnacle. The first ascent in 1865 ended in tragedy with the loss of four of the seven strong team. Reflecting its draw for alpinists and climbers, around 500 have died on the mountain making it one of the most dangerous peaks in the world.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 November 2023
- Aussie_2012Melbourne, Australia960 contributionsBrilliant museum in heart of ZermattBrilliant museum in heart of Zermatt. Yes it is a smallish museum however do remember you are in a small village so don't expect a large museum to spend hours in. However, what you can expect is a very well done museum with a huge amount of information about the history of the area, the mountains, the geology and the people both past and present, significant and the average. We spent a good hour or more here and honestly could've spent more time. Very educational for many including the young with some interactive activities. A small but very good shop plus very helpful staff. Worth a visit and get to appreciate the history of the area.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 August 2024
- Weah201469 contributionsFascinating Zermatt and Matterhorn history. This museum tells the history of the Matterhorn, those who climbed it and those who lost their climbing it. It goes into detail about the first ascent, and the four men who died on the mountain. There are some small home vignettes on the lower level that show how people lived in the area. There is a lot of antique memorabilia related to hiking, including old hiking shoes, rope, clothing, and mountaineering tools. All quite fascinating! We visited in September and the museum was open at 2pm - 6pm. There are free lockers inside that you must store your backpacks in. They have a small gift shop inside. Restrooms are available too.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 September 2024

I should’ve known not to be fooled by the entrance which literally looks like the tip of the iceberg but this museum is much larger than I expected underground and you could really spend a lot of time here exploring and learning. Beautiful exhibits, excellent price, and it was nice and cool. Worth checking out if you have time and wander past.

The Matterhorn Museum (Zermatlantis) offers insight into the development of Zermatt. It shows the triumph and tragedy surrounding the first ascent of the Matterhorn.
The museum is in the form of a reconstituted mountain village consisting of 14 houses, and relates the history and development of tourism in the Zermatt area, including the story of the first ascent of the Matterhorn by Edward Whymper and party.
Our tourgroup was there but unfortunately we missed the opening hours and when we arrived, the museum was already closed for the day. So our guide gave us a good introduction of the museum.
We like the design and architecture theme of the building. It's nice and futuristic looking!
If you like to visit it, do take note of it's opening hours: 3pm - 6pm daily

Despite the small size of the museum, it was a fun hour or two. The museum focuses on some natural history of the region as well as some of the famous feats and climbs. Worth a visit if you want to learn more about the Matterhorn.

This is a small museum displaying of how people from Zermatt lived in the old days & telling the history of the climbers trying to climb the Matterhorn. The entrance is on the ground level & the actual museum is on the lower ground floor.
Our first feeling when we walked down the stairs was.... it was so damp inside! It has many displays, I particularly loved the interior of the old houses & the animals (i.e. Blacknose sheeps) displays. Unfortunately, overall the exhibition was not our cup of tea but it's still good for us to understand a bit more of the local culture & history of Zermatt. In my opinion, it's highly recommended for those who are interested in local history & especially for those who have a Swiss Travel Pass.

It is well worth the visit: one gets into the world of old Zermatt, and you get the story of the first climb to the top in 1865... from various points of view. Very well presented and audio guide to support further. A must from my pov.

Beautiful, quite small but atmospheric museum about the history of the village of Zermatt, mountaineering (local mountain guides) and in particular the dramatic first ascent of the Matterhorn. The exhibits on display are certainly the highlight of the museum. The (frighteningly) thin original rope that broke in the accident can make your blood run cold. Exhibits from the "Mercenary of the Theodul Pass" (glacier corpse from the early modern period) can also be seen here, for example. The museum is definitely worth a visit.

Really cool place to spend 90 minutes. I'm not a museum guy, but this is cool. My wife, 18 year old son and 21 year old daughter all found it enjoyable and interesting. If you are going to stay at those mountains for 2-3 days, its worth your time and 10SF to understand the history!

1. Interesting display
. museum in basement: displays about historical ascent, mountain facilities, and mountain animals. Useful for some understanding on what it was like when people ascended the mountain decades ago, and for preserving historical information.
. shop at lobby (ground floor): local books (few titles available on English).
2. Bonus: photospots nearby
Ibex statue, woman climber statue, marmot statue, Haus Taugwalder, Gemeinde Zermatt.
