The Eiger Trail is an easy-to-moderate difficulty hiking trail that takes about 3 hours to do. You can go up or down, and we decided to go down — meaning we started at Eigergletscher and ended at Alpiglen.

The views are beautiful and we took lunch to eat along the way. There was also a restaurant at Alpiglen, and we had some ice cream there.

The trail is well marked and easy to follow. And if you Google the hike, you’ll find lots more detail on what to see or do.

Some parts of this trail are easy, and the views are incredible. Other parts have a narrow trail and are quite steep. My husband and I did this trail when our son recommended it. He ran it in summer-like weather. We did this trail in the third week of September 2022 and unfortunately there had been some snow at high altitudes. We spoke with a man who works at the cable car station who told us that the only bad part was the beginning. The trail head is uphill, and it was icy but there was enough gravel to get up. There were other icy spots on the trail but nothing too bad until about one-third of the way through. The path went downhill with a curve, and it was ALL ice, no gravel for stability. One foot on the ice and I was on my butt, even with hiking boots and poles. There was no way to stand back up. I had to dig my pole and hand into the snow on the mountainside and inch down the ice on my butt until I came to some gravel about 15 feet downhill. To my left was a drop of about 2100 feet. Once I got down, my husband just sat down and did what I did. This was the scariest hiking situation that we have ever been in. We actually considered the fact that we could slip and go over the edge. Once past this area, the path again had icy spots but nothing as death-defying as this one area. If there was a way around this spot, we didn't see if and no one told us about it. When you make the left at the waterfall to go down to Alpiglen, you are then challenged by steep rocks that are like steps down. They are so steep that there are cables in the mountainside to hold to go down. If you are not an experienced hiker, this trail can be a challenge, especially if the weather is adding to the level of difficulty. the entire hike took us over three hours. This includes the time it took to get down the icy area and a few stops for pictures. There is no cost to hike the trail but the cost to get to the trail is expensive. It is easier to reach the beginning of the trail since they opened the Eiger Express cable car a couple years ago. Alpiglen was a blessing when we arrived; bathroom, shots of Kirsch, and drinks. These were all much needed.

We just hiked the Eiger from the top of the Eiger Trail to Alpiglen, having taking 2 trains from Lauterbrunen to get to the trailhead. The trail has gorgeous views the entire way and we were lucky to have good weather, but I would not call the hike easy. We are experienced hikers from Colorado with all of the appropriate gear and we found it a bit challenging in spots, although doable for anyone in decent shape with hiking boots, poles and rain gear. It only rained briefly near the bottom. Also don’t believe the signs that say it takes 2 hours. That would only we try for young, very fit and co rodent hikers. The trail is mainly a bit of a leader across the mountain at the too, so people who don’t feel comfortable with heights may not like it. My partner was uncomfortable at first but warmed up to it. There is nothing at Alpiglen so bring food and water. It is complicate to get to the start of the trail and back to where you are staying unless you are in Grindelwald, but the SBB app will give you the route and you can buy the train tickets. It is not cheap, but definitely worth it.

On the 12th of September 2022 I walked the Eiger trail with my son. Whe started at the Eiger Gletscher and walked all the wat (~12 km) till Gletscherschlucht. High up the mountains with great vieuws. The trail is not to difficult, though you need trekking shows. Sometimes it's steep, but it was not slippery. At the end to Gletschersluft we walked trough the forrest. About 1000 meters downsizing. It online costs us tired legs afterwards. We finished by walking through the Glacier canyon.

PROS
• Prominent famous mountain
• Easily seen from just about anywhere
• Safely snore the sheer cliff of the north face
• Impressive climbing attempts by daring adventurers

CONS
Not accessible for climbing to otherwise mortal, normal and rational sane individuals

“I VISITED THIS PLACE”…
… and saw it as I explored the area- from Schynige Platte, Mannlichen, Kleine Scheidigg and then from the Eigergletcher station and as we passed it in the Eiger Express cable car. I also saw it from Mürren and Allmendhubel (although from there it was quite cloudy 🌥)

In 2014, we hiked the trail under that sheer north face wall of solid rock, but not this time.

TIPS
It is hard to miss and only the most hardy will attempt to climb it.

From Grindelwald glacier, reachable with a cable car, start The Eiger trail which takes you down to the town, with a fantastic view of the North Face of the Eiger.

From Grindelwald, you can get fantastic views of the North Face and no doubt like me will wonder why climbers try to ascend it.

We spent four nights in Grindelwald at a chalet which had a stunning view of Mount Eiger. This was our first trip to the Alps and the building that housed the apartment rental was a true postcard-perfect charming example of a Swiss chalet in every aspect. The chalet had a wrap-around balcony with plenty of chairs where you could just sit and admire the beautiful snow-covered mountain scenery. The setting is breathtaking, and it is an amazing sight when the mountain peak comes out of the clouds. This has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world and being from the flat coastal plains of Texas, you don’t see this very often. Many people come to the Bernese Alps to hike and climb, but I just enjoyed the view from our balcony.

A fabulous mountain that captivates me from every angle. I love looking up at it from Grindelwald, love seeing the sheer North face from the Eiger Express cable cars and love seeing it from the Eiger Glacier. Very impressive.
