Start by taking the gondola up to First, and then prepare for a wonderful hike. It's fairly easy going and about a 20 minute hike to the lake. Be sure to acclimate to the altitude before starting off. Beautiful views and scenery along the way....More

The lake was still partially frozen during our visit in early June. The hike was well marked and not too difficult for the average person. The views from the lake are beautiful. It rained during some of our hike, but the biggest thing we learned...More

All of the trails have been closed on First, including the trail to Balchalpsee lake. Several groups of people were crossing the close signs, but we decided to take caution and see how far we could get. It’s a very nice hike. There’s a steep...More

Great walk, all pathed and accessible even in winter. But, a word of warning if you walk at this time of year, there is no lake to see. But you do see some beautiful mountains and have a great little hike. Suitable for those a...More

A fabulous gondola ride from Grindelwald to First is followed by about a one and a half mile's walk to two lakes the first the smaller of the two and slightly lower in elevation. The walk is a popular one and we were doing it...More

The amazing scenic views of alpine lake Bachalpsee located in Grindewald Switzerland are worth the effort to see. You can walk around this glacial lake, it can be busy as it is a popular destination with tourists and locals.

The lake tends to get crowded. Best way to experience it without crowds: Hike from Schynige Platte and stay overnight at Berghotel Faulhorn, then hike down in the morning before the crowds have arrived.

The walk from First Grindelwald to Lake Bachalpsee is beautiful. Its a gravel and mud path and 30-40% of the walk is uphill so wear comfortable shoes. Takes about 45 minutes to one hour each way. Don't miss the walk!

Well...although we've been to the area three different times, we've always waited until late June to arrive so that all of the trails would be open. That could be a problem with going in late April. Snowshoes?
