About
The cathedral represents one of the last monumental Baroque monastic constructions in Europe. It was built from 1755 to 1767 under the direction of Vorarlberg native and master builder Johann Michael Beer. The choir stalls with 84 lovely carved seats and the historic organ are works of art in and of themselves. Every Tuesday, there is a Evening Prayer (Domvesper)at 5.30 P.M. The inside of the church is painted in vibrant colours and adorned with stucco, and the interior is decorated with numerous carvings. A serene atmosphere prevails in the church thanks to the soft lighting and malachite green stucco. After the secularisation of the Convent in 1805, the church became a parish church and 1847 at the same time cathedral of the new founded diocese. In 2013, the altar area was renewed. Especially impressive is the baptism fountain with the respecting of the frescos of the cupola. Beside the different liturgy Services and concerts there are also guided tours, for example from may to September every Saturday at 10.30 A.M. (Free admission, collect).

The St Gallen Cathedral was a surprise. It was very large and majestic. The art very detailed with some 3D effects built into the paintings, if you look close. I did not expect such a splendid Cathedral in St Gallen. However, it rivals most of the grand cathedrals in Europe.

The church is free to enter. It is a Roman Catholic Church in the baroque style and opened in 1772. It is part of the Abby of St. Gallen and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Both exterior and interior are extraordinary. A marvellous double towered edifice has ornate embellishments, soaring heavenwards.

Inside is awe-inspiring. Beauties of Baroque are everywhere.

Dating from around the mid 1700s, it replaced earlier places of worship, including the earliest, a hermitage of the Irish Monk Gallus, surmised to have originated around 612.

Stucco abounds, as do frescoes. Lovely light emerald hues are a predominant embellishment on the columns and arches, against a backdrop of startling white.

Music is provided by some great treasured organs.

The cathedral is located centrally and imposing in sight. The inside is well preserved and decorated unlike other Swiss churches due to the reformist activity. The statues, frescos and ceiling paintings are a sight to behold. The altar is huge and greatly decorated and adorned. A very good place to pray, contemplate and relax.

Nothing is in English. It was pretty though. If you are interested in the history about the church and want to spend more than 10-15 minutes just looking at it you would probably need a guide in your language.

I stopped by to pay my respects and this place is pretty big. It certainly is one of the most decorated churches I have seen on my travels of the world.

The inside is breathtaking, I really loved it. Beautiful decorations, but no opulence. Worth a stop while visiting St Gallen.

In the middle of the town Saint Gallen is the abbey located. There is no parking at the abbey itself, you just have to park at a parking lot. We bought the tickets online to avoid a queue but you can also buy them at the abbey. If you buy the "full" ticket you have access to the library, the exhibition and the vault. The library is the most impressive one. The rest tells a lot about the history and the preservation of the books. You can't take a bag/ luggage inside the areas. The church is free to visit.

After an appointment we were given a tour through the former abbey, the stunning church and its two crypts, the library.. Sadly I didn’t have much time, nevertheless it was amazing to dive into the history and beauty of this place. I’ll certainly come back.

Generally, I don't like cathedrals and churches like this one. It's too gaudy. But the paintings on the ceilings on this cathedral are very impressive and I could have spent hours looking at them.
