The Abbey Library St. Gallen, famous for its beautiful baroque hall, is one of the oldest libraries in the world. And it holds one of the most important manuscript collections in Europe, especially for the Carolingian and Ottonian period from the 8th to the 11th century. The collection is presented to the visitors in changing and thematised expositions. The library forms the central part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Convent of St. Gallen.

To be surrounded by manuscripts that are 1000s of years old under the roof of one of the most exquisitely painted libraries was a very humbling experience. Though the library is small, it is extremely impressive. The roof is beautifully painted and the manuscripts are history on display! If you are in St. Gallen and have an hour to spare,... More

The library is a must-see if you go in this part of the country. The entry price covers the library, the lapidarium and the cathedral and surrounding, so it seems fair. I advise to take the audioguide or you will miss many things. However already in the 1 room that is the library it is VERY difficult to find the... More

Beautiful library with ornate ceilings and columns. Strongly recommend visitors rent audio guides in your native language (they have major international languages) for description of library, cathedral, and grounds.

This is an incredible room. Building the monastery began in the Ninth century and was known always as a spectacular place. The library is architecturally amazing, and is in pristine condition. The inlaid floors are particularly beautiful and feature pine, fir and cherry woods. The undulating book cases are hand carved, and magnificent. The baroque ceiling and murals are in... More

Not to be missed. Hire headphones for 5 francs as the information is so interesting and unless you listen to the information about the library, you will miss out on so much.

Visited St Gallen because of Abbey library. Took a train ride from Zurich n arrived at St Gallen in around one hour. Took a short walk to the library. Entrance into the library is free with the STP. We spent close to one hour inside. Suggest to rent the audio guide in order to better understand the library. Worthwhile visit.

This is well-worth seeing! This is an work of art in architecture! If possible get a guide to show you details of the library, the columns between the beautiful bookcases are doors that hold information about the books in that section. The ceiling is a work of art too! There are glass cases showcasing some of the 500 year old... More
