This is not a huge museum but it has some interesting things to look at. They give you an iPad that you can use to scan codes for more information in a variety of languages. We spent 30 minutes there but one could spend more time. Maybe wouldn't have paid extra to get it, but for fee with a Museum card it was worth stopping in.

After our disappointing visit to the Natural History Museum, where almost everything was in German, we were sceptical about visiting this museum. But as we had bought a combination ticket for the two museums, we decided to go ahead.

This was a very pleasant surprise. Upon arrival we were each given an ipad and this was used to scan barcoded stickers in front of each exhibit. We could then read the information in English (I'm not sure what other languages are available besides German).

The exhibits themselves were varied, so there should be something for most interests. Some of the exhibits were located on the stairs, so I'm not sure how that would work from a safety perspective in busy periods, but didn't seem to be a problem on a quiet Saturday afternoon.

I did have a few issues with the ipad not reading the barcodes, but a staff member happily swapped that ipad out for a different one.

From ancient times right up to the modern and across a plethora of exhibits, equipped with barcodes, the story of the city and surrounds is well told.

Founding documents and other scripted displays plus paintings capture the cogent landmarks in its evolvement.

Coming into the modern era evocative artefacts such as phonographs and travel accoutrements document the arrival of leisure time pursuits for many people.

This museum was a disappointment. Artifacts were in cages, sometimes obscuring the view of objects placed behind them. For English, we got an iPad. You scan a bar code in front of the cage and read about the time. That was helpful, although sometimes the codes were right next to each other and it was not clear which code went with which item and some trial and error was required. Also, the organization was not clear.

The most amazing museum ever. There are floors of exhibits of all types and eras and they are all wonderfully presented. You go round with a device that scans the bar codes of the exhibit and get information on each one. Informative and interesting. Well worth a visit of several hours.

Beware visitors from the UK! They won’t let you into this museum! There was a very nice lady on reception but she refused us entry to the museum with a Covid pass issued by the UK Government, (stating that we were fully vaccinated, how, where and when we were vaccinated) passport iD and a certificate from the Swiss Government allowing us entry to Switzerland , but not to their official buildings it seems! All because our certificate does not have a QR code. They don’t from the UK! This is museum policy. We were allowed to travel on buses, trains, trams, go into restaurants and shops but not museums and art galleries. . Luckily a private art collection read the info on our Covid pass and let us in so our visit to Lucerne for art wasn’t totally wasted and we had a pleasant lunch.

This museum may be tiny but it is packed with historical artifacts. A Must for first timers traveling to Luzer.

We used the Lucerne Museum card for entry the staff were helpful but the exhibits were displayed in a haphazard way and the tablets did not always pick up the barcodes and therefore we could not get the information we required.

The Luzern Historical Museum is really more of a 21st-century "cabinet of curiosities" than a museum unto itself.

The exhibits are presented in cages, and with barcodes attached. There being no text in the museum itself, you receive a tablet which scans the barcode and presents a little blurb about the item in either German or English.
At least, that's the plan.

In many cases, it's unclear precisely which barcode relates to which item, so you can spend a couple of minutes scanning everything in sight in the hope of getting what you're after.
The scanner can also be a bit temperamental. Hold it too close or too far from the barcode and it won't scan. Thankfully, it doesn't seem to have problems where the sticker is coming loose at the edges, which several are.

The information can also be quite patchy. "Item not in the inventory" comes up sometimes, as does the comment regarding a shield that "it is impossible to identify this shield with any individual noble family. Neither are particularly helpful, you might say.

The museum also takes a very broad view of what constitutes "history". Prehistoric pottery makes sense, as do old pictures. Does everything else on display? Not without any level of context being provided, and that's not what the scanner does.
Essentially, the idea seems to be "this item is at least a decade old. Let's include it."
With minimal explanation of why any particular item is worthwhile, it becomes an exercise in futility to try to understand what's going on.

Luzern has a fascinating history, as do both the region of Central Switzerland and the country itself.
Sadly, the visitor will not learn this via the museum.

I have visited this museum several times as I have a Museum Pass (strongly recommended in you live in Switzerland or spend time here as museums are quite expensive).
Apart from a nice exhibit I have see, I have found the museum quite difficult to follow.
True: you are given iPads to scan the QR codes of some objects and read the story behind, but the frame is not compact and I did not get any clear picture of the history of Lucerne which was my goal by entering this museum.
The museum wants to be different and puts together into cages and glass cases objects from different periods. The end result is just confusing and fragmented.
Interesting to see the WeinMarkt original fountain. That's my favourite.
Take the 20 minute audioguide for an explanation of the nearby Spreuerbrücke.
