This was a trip we figured out just by looking at a map, going deeper into the Alps.

Zurich train to Lucerne, then another train to Engelberg. From Engelberg it's a bus to Brunni-Bahnen, then a cable car to the top (also known as Mount Ristis?). All travel covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

Total journey time from Zurich was about 2.5 hours. We reached Brunni at lunchtime and enjoyed some of the best mountain views. Totally surrounded by the Alps - you can see Titlis from here.

There's a decent restaurant here (portions are big - enough to share between two people).

You can also follow the trail up, for more scenic views. You will come across a chair lift that takes you further up, but that wasn't covered by the Swiss Travel Pass so we didn't take it - cost was 15 CHF per person for the return trip.

A 15 min walk from Engelberg train station and it was wonderful. Large gondola with 1 stop and you were at Ristis where there is a adventure playground and toboggan for the kids. Restaurant there with facilities. Some great views of titlis mountain and others. Short 5 min walk to a chair lift up to Gleitschirmstartplatz Brunni where there was a hotel, restaurant and pond. This pond had a trail around it you could walk bare foot, different textures and temperatures. Very sensory! My kids and I went around twice!

Provides a spectacular 360 degree view. An immensely enjoyable trip to the mountain top with the sun shining onto the snow capped mountains. Shall visit again in the next trip.

The Brunni-Brunnihütte cablecar/charlift takes you from Engelberg village, through Ristis middle station, to Brunnihütte. This grants access to a range of activities, including walking, mountain biking, climbing, sledging, skiing and paragliding. The cablecar is often business from the hours of 10:00 -12:00, as visitors make their way to the cooling air of Härzlisee, where an alpine restaurant and picnic area await, as well as the full range of alpine sports.

I usually visit Brunni for skiing, since its inclusive in the Titlis ski pass. But if you want to visit Brunni alone in Summer for example, I was shocked how expensive the Gondola up was (20CHF only the way up, 29CHF with the chairlift inclusive, only the way up). The gondola is pretty modern and offers a nice view. For skiing there are not many slopes and you're done with all the slopes in 1.5h, but besides that you get a stunning scenic view at the valley and Titlis. The black slope on Schonegg (1. Picture) is my favorite, it offers an awesome view and is definitely worth a visit. The slope down to the valley is sadly rarely open (only when there is very much snow) but is fun to ski. (Better look the bus time schedule before taking the slope down).
The chairlift might use some improvement, its one of the slowest I've been on.
In Summer there are a lot of nice hiking trails. I advice to try out the Walenpfad (one of most beautiful and scenic trail I've seen) to Bannalp, or the Rotgrätli trail via Rugghubel hut (a bit steeper and sporty trail) to Bannalp. If you have some endurance/training you can start from Brunni hut to Rotgrätli to Bannalp and return via Walenpfad.
Also the via ferrata to Rigidalstock (2. Picture) is worth to mention, consider almost 4h for that trip. (The way up is exhausting) but you have an epic view from the peak. There is also an easier route up, if you're not really a mountaineer. On nice weather days the via ferrata and Rigidalstock peak can get pretty crowded.

We have been to Engelberg skiing for several years at Easter & normally we are unable to ski this part as the snow is melted. This year, due to the incredible snow conditions we could ski & it was fun but too basic for experienced skiers. The next day there was no snow as the weather had been so hot we thought we might melt!

Great trip up the mountain with amazing scenery at the top. Bring your own water as it is $5 for 500 ml bottle. The kids did the toboggan run and had a blast!

The whole thing was PERFECT. I loved everything, the view, the cable car, the chair lift, and most of all the toboggan run omg that was BRILLIANT. Just make sure you don't have a crazy for speed person after you because it will ruin all the fun of you just going at your own pace and enjoying sliding down the Alps (I had my husband on the slide behind me. He was threatening to divorce me unless I went faster :S

All those people going to Titlis, we saw them on our way back, they would just go up and see nothing because of the fog and the clouds. Also, on Brunni IT WASN'T RAINING. it does smell very bad on the ground in Engelberg though, but once you go up it's just perfect. And it's the ONLY cheap -for Swiss standards- option for families around Engelberg (43 euro per adult for a return trip, but kids go free oh yes). Highly recommended

We were staying in Engelberg and we're exploring things to do besides Titlus.

We found this by chance and really enjoyed our day.

The bus from the station takes only 10 minutes and first level using cable car is free for Swiss travel pass holders.

For the chairlift to the second level it is 15 CHF per person.

The first level has lots of activities for kids like play areas and the main attraction is a tonoggan run (like sled) which is a mimust see for kids.

Our children wanted to keep going again and again for this.

On the second level there are some excellent views with a small restaurant.

Overall it was a fun filled day for the kids.
