We’ve visited hundreds of churches across Europe, fascinating historical structures each with tremendous history and durability. Dating to the 1720s, this facility isn’t anywhere near the oldest, nor is it remotely the most beautiful. It’s really not worth a stop.

You’ll only find an ordinary building with no majestic exterior features nor remarkable interior characteristics other than a large organ. There is no stained glass, no stunning paintings, no famous burials. And there are numerous sketchy people on the steps at all times of day that you may want to avoid.

Earlier churches date back to almost 800 years but this more modern one was built during the early 1700s.

In grand stone and of a Baroque style it was interesting to discover that it’s one of the largest Swiss Reformed places of worship in the country.

Ornate facades are crowned by a terrific steeple with clock-faces and belfry.

Possibly the prettiest Protestant church that we've ever seen. We were lucky enough to catch an organ concert, too. Certainly worth popping in. It's right next to the train station.

This is probably the first Church you'll see if you arrived in the Swiss capital by train, as it stands right next door to the railway station.
It's a simple Baroque style Reformist Church.

This large and relatively simple Baroque Swiss reformation church is nice place to stop for a few minutes of calm and reflection.

Reformist church built in the 18th century in Baroque Style. It is next to the train station, so it may be the first point of interest in the city you visit.

The Heilliggeistkirche was directly across the street from our hotel, the Hotel Schweizerhof, so it was the first place we hit after settling into our rooms.

From the outside, it is a wedding cake. With careful footwork, to avoid the tram lines cutting across your lens, you can take some very pretty pictures.

Inside, it is a Fabergé Egg, at least the ceiling: Easter pastels for everyone. The organ is lovely. Apparently, judging by the signage, the posters, and the fliers, the church is used a lot or musical concerts - it certainly has great acoustics for it.

Why three stars? Not because the Church of the Holy Ghost isn't beautiful - it is - but if you've been to Europe, you know that you will run into thousands of churches and pass by thousands more you didn't know about that are MORE, well, profound, interesting, impressive, moving. If you have time for this one or the Cathedral, go with the Cathedral. That said, I'm not unhappy we stopped in for a look.

I mentioned in my title that the Heilliggeistkirche has an interesting story. It does. Check out the Wikipedia entry. The first buildings went up in 1228 - maybe THAT on its own is reason enough to pay a little respect...

While we weren't able to tour the interior, we did walk around the church during our tour of Old Town and appreciated how beautiful and old the church was.

Large sanctuary. Very plain, compared to most church in Bern. Very well maintained. It is located close to the train station. If you are visiting and looking for beautiful, historic churches to see, I'd suggest seeing Bern Minster.
