    Nice Walking But Some Incline
We had fun just walking around without aim. We ended ups seeing a lot of old buildings and found a good cafe, but were severely overcharged. We don't know if it was an accident or on purpose. They did correct the mistake.

    Really beautiful
A lovely walk - or tram ride - down to the old town. It's about 1km from the main Basel SBB Station so worth getting the tram on the way back as its uphill! The town hall is in the square but walk behind this and you will find the rest of the old town and the Minster cathedral. It's completely beautiful! Walk a little further and you will see the Reine.

    Best of Basel
Spent one day in Basel and had a fab time. The following are just some of the spots I visited, easy to walk around. Spalentor City Gate, old town, town hall, Basel cathedral, (Munster), Tinguely fountain, cross the Middle bridge (Mittlere Burke) and sit alongside the Rhine in the sun. Lots of urban art, trendy, arty and foody. Depending on travel time, bucettes are between spring to autumn, city’s favourite places to meet for coffee, drinks or dinner. Basel carnival is from 4am Monday after Ash Wednesday for 3 days. Popular at Christmas, one of largest in Switzerland.

Basel's Altstadt (Old Town) is compact, easy to walk around, with many old buildings, many bookshops, small galleries, arts and handicraft shops. Walking around the old and often cobbled streets is a pleasure, and is a nice contrast to the otherwise somewhat sterile architecture of modern Basel. Do spend a few hours there...

Radiating out from the terrifically atmospheric Barfüsserplatz, the Old Town is a joy to move around.

It is home to outstanding museums. The Historical Museum in the Barfüsserkirche has absorbing exhibits in an outstanding setting.

Marktplatz is another gorgeous space, dominated as it is by the grand Town Hall, resplendent with red façade.

A multitude of cafes and restaurants are dotted throughout and it was grand sitting outside enjoying refreshments in the lovely surroundings.

We caught the tram to Marketplatz which is located in the old town. There was a market on the day we visited and the historical Rathaus (Town Hall) is is located here.

There are lots of narrow alleyways to explore where you will see many century-old buildings. We loved the architecture in Basel Old Town, I sat in one of the laneways on the footpath and enjoyed a local wine.

Basel’s Old Town is very beautiful and well preserved.

It is not one of the most beautiful old cities I have seen in Europe, but it is worth visiting. Quite a few buildings out of the ordinary, with interesting architecture. It should be mentioned the Basel Minster cathedral, the old Spalentor gate, Barfusserplatz square, Lohnhof, the old town hall, the train station. There are also several interesting museums: the Music Museum, the Barfusserkirche History Museum, the Natural History Museum.

Basel's Old Town, is a manageable size, so leave the car in an underground car park and take to the streets. Full of history, well preserved ancient houses mix side by side with quality speciality shops, cafes and galleries. Some climbing up and down ancient steps required but the views are worthwhile. What a charming city.

Rathaus and old town of Basel. This city in Switzerland is under estimated though it has a lot to offer . It is one of major train station in Switzerland and apart from being that it is a beautiful town with amazing downtown . Had amazing brownie and coffee opp to Rathaus at McDonald’s enjoying and sinking in the beauty and color . Highly recommended

Even in a cold raining day, we still enjoyed walking in the old town of Basel. We stared from the interesting Tinguely Fountain to Basel Cathedral, appreciated the architecture and history. After see the City Hall, we warmed up in nearby restaurant for lunch.

Original architecture with colors, the old town offers a nice and picturesque picture of the city.
Pleasant atmosphere, small producers market on the square, and some coffee booths too are available for a break.
Definitely an area to see, with cafés, restaurant and various shops.

Our Viking River Cruise ended in Basel on a Sunday morning this past April. I got out early and took a quiet walk through Old Town. I walked by the Town Hall up to Basel Minster and back along the Rhine to the location where our boat was docked. It was very pleasant and enjoyable because there were very few people out that early.
