- las123singing2016Whitley Bay, United Kingdom126 contributionsA Place of PeaceThis magnificent building stands out on the hillside in Assisi. It’s presence is a stark reminder of the life and work of St Francis, who, I am sure, would be truly humbled at such a basilica built in his memory and which holds his remains. The artwork and frescoes are truly outstanding. It is a pilgrim site for all religious denominations and well worth a visit. As a Third Order Franciscan myself, I was amazed at both the building and its contents. Well worth a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- Anna HChicago, Illinois1,168 contributionsA pilgrimage church for art and religion.Multi layer church, containing the tomb of St Francis. The lower level is constantly in use for services, and the tour guides are all very respectful. You can visit the tomb, and collect candles to share with friends/family as a special remembrance. The Giotto and Cimabue frescoes are magnificent, but undergoing continuous restoration, so the crucifixion is only visible through the side before entering the transept. Try to enjoy the biblical stories depcted. On the main level, you can see frescoes of the life of St Francis and see the papal chair.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 14 November 2023
- ksufan88Wichita, Kansas6,589 contributionsBeautiful frescoes but no pictures allowedThis huge cathedral has fantastic frescoes in both the lower and upper basilicas. The lower basilica paintings are mostly undamaged and in bright colors where the upper paintings are more faded but tell an interesting story of the life of St Francis. There are plenty of signs pointing a mostly one way path between the basilicas and also to the crypt where you will find the tomb of the saint.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 November 2023

I entered this place with high expectations that unfortunately were disappointed. The works of art are beautiful, but you can not enjoy them properly. For every single explanation you have to pay 2 Euros and the number of people was such that you could not stop to look at anything. Finally, the people there seemed almost annoyed by our presence. I am really sorry.

Wow, what a beautiful church with amazing photo opportunities everywhere.
There is so much history in the building and was really great to hear about it all with a guide to explain it all.
The view from the outside alone is worth the trip up there.

We toured the Basilica with a local guide who partially focused on art history. We began in the lower church and visited the crypt of St. Francis. Our guide then described the different styles of painting and the various painters who had adorned the churches. It was interesting to see the differences that come with age. A young version of an artist had painted in the upper church, then returned years later to repaint parts of the lower church. His growth as an artist is obvious.
The Franciscan monks are very strict - no photos inside.

Once you arrive in Assisi to visit the basilica I recommend parking at the Saba Giovanni Paolo II car park which is very close to the site
The paid audio guide is very useful and allows you to fully enjoy this experience
the souvenir shop is well stocked
Giotto's frescoes in the Upper and Lower Basilica are breathtaking
they captivate you to the point that you have difficulty leaving the basilica because it is superlative
Go there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is by no means a bad review of San Francisco church. It is a truly beautiful and inspiring place. My wife and I are both Catholic and were both almost moved to tears at the sight of St. Francis' tomb. That said we have been all over Europe and Italy in particular and have never seen such a tourist trap as is Assisi!. You can't walk 10meters without passing a "souvenir" shop ,all selling the same stuff.
The quality of the food almost without exception is terrible. ( One notable exception is the Foro Romano cafeteria. It's food is exceptionally good and relatively inexpensive). There is no in town transportation except very expensive cabs which leaves you having to walk up and down long steep hill all day. We're glad we went and saw the church but the town in spite of its great views is a huge let down!

We waited about 45 minutes in line before entering this basilica. The paintings inside (frescoes) are worth seeing (Martini, Giotto and Cimabue above all) and the tomb of St Francis. The visit takes less than an hour. Free entrance. There is a souvenir shop inside.

If you are religious this is a sacred place where you can find peace, if you are not you will see one of the brightest jewels of italy. The architecture of the basilica is fantastic, the paintings of the two basilica s are masterpieces of italian history. It is one of the most iconic places in the entire world.

It was a beautiful experience-a lower and upper church, complete with the interiors of an exquisite art museum. There are so many reviews that cover all of the many reasons why this was an excellent place to visit. I just wanted to remind English speakers that if you are in Assisi on a Sunday, the Basilica offers a 9AM English Mass. Though it was only a small group of less than 100 (held in the Upper Church), it was delightful. We spoke to the Friar and to the man who played the guitar during the services. He said he was originally from Boston but fell in love with Assisi, and he and his wife now live there and are very active in the Church. It was a wonderful way to start our day at the Basilica. I hope that more English speaking people will make plans to attend the English Mass if they find themselves at St. Francis on a Sunday morning,

A unique place where spirituality and beauty of the places magically blend. The basilica dominates the entire town and welcomes visitors from afar, showing itself in all its splendor. The only flaw is the public bathrooms. Charging 50 cents seems excessive to me...

The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi is one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy and with its accompanying friary, is a distinctive landmark to those approaching Assisi. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. A very sacred place, take your time to visit the upper and lower parts as you take in the beauty of all the frescoes, paintings, sculptures and many other works of art. You will feel a divine presence.
