The fountain of Siena richest in history, also mentioned by Dante and Boccaccio and a few centuries before the marble Fonte Gaia in Piazza del Campo, is today in a form not dissimilar to how it should have appeared in the middle ages.

It consists of three separate pools, which historically were used for the supply of drinking water, for washing clothes and as a drinking trough for animals, covered by deep vaults opened by Gothic arches. The square in which it is located - which you can imagine in other times perpetually crowded with all sorts of people and animals, with picturesque outfits of bickering, gossip, cursing, nitrites and so on - is now a bit 'secluded from the great slip roads and allows, thanks to the tiny garden in front of the fountain, a pleasant stop during the visit of the city. Also remarkable is the view from below of the bulk of the Basilica of San Domenico.

...while passing through Siena I noticed this source which is said to be the oldest among those existing in the city!!...Siena is located on an arid hill and far from watercourses!!...and at the time they used these types of fountains to get water!!…this source is called Fontebranda!!…it is a Gothic monument of the city!!…but Dante and Boccaccio also wrote about this source!!…and it is also linked to the story of Santa Caterina who lived right in those parts!!…seeing this structure!!…it feels like going back in time!!…a special atmosphere!!…and not to be missed if you are in Siena!!…

We passed this imposing historic fresh water fountain in Siena.

A massive building with crystal clear water and several fish.

If you stroll down Fontebranda from Via di Citta you'll come across this interesting medieval fountain in a quiet area. It's reputedly the oldest fountain in Siena and was even mentioned by Dante in the 'Inferno'. Don't be put off by the steep streep down because just across the road from the fountain is a series of escalators that will take you back to the top!

This medieval cistern and fountain was an interesting stop along our walk through Siena. It was the original source of water for the town, with three sections, one for drinking, one for animals, and one for washing. The fountain now has flowing water with many small fish.

This was located directed behind our hotel and it was so interesting. There were lots of people there when we visited. The children especially enjoyed the fish and feeding them.

The medieval fountain (it is more a cistern than a fountain) was built in the 13th century with three arches in Gothic style and a crenellated roof near the city gate after which it was named. It is a bit out of the usual tourists’ routes, but it is worth seeing as another fine example of medieval architecture.

Gorgeous architecture put into simple everyday tool, this well now only provides for the fish swimming in it. Latin on the far walls and vaulted ceilings add to it charm. Easy to get to if you park in the S. Maria parking lot. We saw it on the way back to the parking instead of using the escalators

This ancient "fountain" (really a water supply for the locals of the time, dating back to 1192 IIRC) is about a 5-minute walk downhill from the main sights.

There is none of the impressive artwork found elsewhere in Siena, but it is a large building steeped in history. There is a description in both Italian and English. It is far from the crowds (I was the only one there in the early afternoon) yet easy to find. Well worth a visit to this hidden gem.
