Wonderful hand painted dishes and ornaments w some vendors in US carrying their items incl one in The Washington square area of SF where Sonia has come to paint personalized ornaments. The 17 contrade dishes are charming and love to collect all of them. We started a collection this trip and learned about Sonia’s parents and sister who runt his business for 35 years . Now we will watch Instagram for when she is next in the US . Shop is near duomo.. easy walk from

I made the mistake of wishing I had purchased something from them and didn't actually purchase it until I came back to the States. They were very professional to deal with, gave me all of my options, and kept me updatd every step of the way. Paying them through PayPal is also the way to go. Much less $$ than an international wire transfer. As for the pottery, it is gorgeous! Very authentic and I can't wait to go back to Siena to visit their shop again.

I was visiting Siena with 5 adult family members this month and stopped in this shop to buy local. I typically make reasonable efforts to support local small businesses as I understand that day tourism can be draining on a municipality. In no way do I expect to be treated like royalty, and I completely grasp that we do not speak Italian and not every shopkeeper/artisan speaks English. That said, there are universal signs of friendliness, and not one was exhibited. The young lady glazing when we entered seemed totally disgusted that someone came into the shop: she barely looked up from her project. There was essentially no acknowledgment of our presence. I had no intention of taking any photos in the shop, but was also put off by the number of signs saying this is not welcome: it creates a forbidding environment. I was also confused by the "Do not touch" signs. I'm certainly not going to buy if I don't look an item over, but was I going to get in trouble if I touched something? I was confused, and based on the unpleasantness of the artisan, I wasn't sure of what to expect.
In the end, our group of 6 spent very little due almost entirely to the atmosphere of the shop. It's a real shame as their pieces were very nice, but who wants angry ceramics?

We stopped in to admire the colorful plates, bowls, pitchers and tiles that adorn the walls of Bianco e Nero and had wonderful conversation with Sonia, whose English is far better than her comments suggest. As I write this I am looking at the several pieces with Tuscan landscapes that we keep in our kitchen. (They travelled quite well in our carry on bags on the trip home.) Whether it's landscapes, floral designs or symbols of the contrade, Bianco e Nero has attractive mementos of your trip to Siena.

The owner of the shop made me custom dishes. They came out beautiful. They ship all over the world. I looked everywhere for good quality dishes and this was the best around.

I first found Sonia and her father in 2000 on one of my first trips to Siena. I LOVED the Palio plates they create and had to have some. I finally bought 8 dinner plates in 2009 on my 4th visit to Siena and use them on special occasions. My friends and family just love them
This year I planned on buying more to round out my set, ordering 6 more plates. I can hardly wait to receive them and send Sonia pictures of my next dinner part.

Bianco e Nero is one of those shops that instantly makes you feel good.
The tiny ceramic shop around the corner from the Duomo di Siena, is a floor-to-ceiling explosion of color featuring beautiful, hand-painted designs of the contrade of the Palio di Siena on a head-spinning selection of plates, bowls, pitchers, platters, mugs and everything in between! It could also have something to do with the owners, Sonia Staccioli and her father.
Both father and daughter calmly paint away, infront of visitors, Sonia at a little table in the entrance and her father in the middle of the shop behind the cash register, from leaves to Tuscan cyprus trees to beautiful, heraldic Palio images.
Sonia is a friendly, chatty host who will gladly explain the intricacies of the Palio with customers, as well as share a bit of Palio gossip (her contrada is La Torre, its symbol a handsome elephant carrying an obelisk on its back) or of her family's ceramics which also include beautiful scenese of Tuscan landscapes.
In a day and age when small, family-run shops are giving way to chains, and when more and more Italian products have that familiar "Made in China" stamp, Bianco e Nero is a rare treasure!

I regret only that he could not respond well in English in this wonderful reviews and comments.
I'm glad that there are people who appreciate our work family.
Always expect all customers with the desire to explain and teach, both the Italian Majolica, both the history of the Palio and Contrada.
We look back to Black and White!

My wife and I stumbled into Sonia's shop while her father was putting the finishing touches on a hand painted platter featuring a beautiful Tuscan scene. Sonia, full of pride in her shop and in her craft spoke to us about life in Siena, her art and more. If you are in the region, Siena is well worth spending a few days, and Sonia"s shop is well worth the visit.

I had the pleasure of stumbling across this little gem whilst wandering the streets of Siena. Like the other reviewers here, it was wonderful to see Sonia and her father (Walter) paint in the shop as I pottered (pardon the pun). They create the most beautiful pieces and meeting the artists who created (and signed) your item is something unique. Thoroughly recommend visiting this store and learning more about their work, not to mention buying the perfect momento (or three!) to remind you of this lovely part of the world.
