The picturesque Via di Citta street passes along the historic main square of Piazza del Campo. The atmosphere is beautiful. We feel the spirit of the Middle Ages every step of the way, giving us the opportunity to observe and enjoy the facades of beautiful buildings and palaces. Via di Citta is one of the main streets of old Siena. Today it is a pedestrian road that is flanked by many of the well-known historical buildings in the city. The Via di Citta or City Road was once called the Via Galgaria. This was because it consisted at the time of the city shoemakers' shops. The road is laid as a slope and the highest point which is a quarter flanked by medieval structures commands spectacular views across the Siena. At one end of the street is a square called the Quattro Cantoni. The square is the meeting point of the main streets of the city. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the high society of the city frequented the site. The beautiful buildings along the Via di Citta are the Palazzo Patrizi that dates back to the 14th century and houses the Accademia degli Intronati today, the music academy at the Palazzo Chigi-Saracini, the Palazzo delle Papesse, and Florentine renaissance style building that houses a contemporary arts center, in the Gothic style. I was particularly impressed by the Palazzo Marsili buildings and the Loggia della Mercanzia, the Sienese equivalent of a chamber of commerce.

It gets crowded in season, but just walk along the street and enjoy it. If you have to wait until dinner time for the crowds to thin out.

Via di Citta is the street behind the Campo. Lots of restaurants, shopping and bars. Fun to walk as there are many unique shops to go into. Pretty touristy but worth the walk.

One of the main pedestrian streets of Siena. It connects with Via Banchi di sopra at the beautiful Loggia della Mercanzia. The street is lined with several shops and restaurants and it streches around and behind Piazza del Campo. In several spots along the street it's possible to have a glimpse of the Campo. Unlike many other touristy areas it's really possible to find very interesting items in the shops on this beautiful street.

Imagine the delight of arriving in Siena the day after the Palio and finding yourself in the midst of the celebratory parade on Via di Citta. It seemed as if the entire population from the winning contrada (believe me there were hundreds many in medieval costumes) were marching down the cobbled street. Flag throwers and drummers lead the way, the victorious rider and stead followed and a succession of religious statues, icons and citizens trailed behind. Even without the festivities, Via di Citta is a fascinating mix of Palazzi, Loggia, shops and restaurants. Look for Palazzo Chigi-Sarcini that houses the Academy of Music. Relish a stroll from Piazza Postierla to Banchi di Sopra and feel transported to medieval Siena.

Classic main drag of a historic city center. Still crowded and populated by shops. If you visit Siena you will walk up and down this street (by this name or by the other names it gets as it extends away from the Campo).

One of the major streets in Siena. Shops, cafes, restaurants.....you name it you will find it here. Worth a visit. Travelers to Rome in the middle ages used this street on their pilgrimage.

Dodging cars and their splashing, we strolled Via di Citta in the rain. Shops and small trattoria were in abundance, and the views to side streets most interesting

The streets of the historic centre of Siena have no pavements so everyone much watch out for cars and bikes. The Via di Citta curls around behind the Piazza di Campo and then continues on - lots of nice shops, restaurants etc
