We went to this Basilica as part of a bus excursion from Florence. The importance of this church is that it holds the head of one of Italy's patron saints, Saint Catherine of Siena who lived from 1347 to 1388, and worked out of this church for part of her life. The church itself is fairly plain both outside and... More

The church is interesting to vist but is not a must see. There is a good view of siena from the church which made our walk to the church worthwhile.

Tvhe Basilica di San Francesco took awhile to get to but easy by foot. The church is massive inside but dark and a bit eerie. They are doing a massive renovation of the paintings. One of the several alcoves in the front of the church was being worked on while we were there with many students on the scaffolding learning... More

Every time we travel to Siena, we always visit this church. Being slightly off the beaten track (only a ten to fifteen minute walk from the Campo), it is always quieter than the city centre and the cavernous baslica feels empty even if there are other visitors. With a little planning around opening times, it is also easy to combine... More

This church stand out from all the many others, given that Siena was not a papal city. It's a don't miss while in Siena.

The unfinished Basilica due to the plague. It is big but not much to see other than the mummified head of St. Catherine behind the altar. Just that in itself is worth going to this church

I am very glad we came here. This simple church was so special in that it reminded me of a poem by e.e. Cummings, "I am a little church no great cathedral". It felt warm to me.

If you enjoyed the frescoes in the Palazzo Pubblico (and if you didn't, what are you doing in Siena?), you'll be delighted by the Lorinzetti in here.
