St. Catherine passed a large part of her life inside the walls of this stupendous Basilica, which was one of the first to be dedicated to St. Dominic. It was begun by the Dominicans in 1226 on the hill of Camporegio which they had received as a gift from the Malavolti family. Most of the actual rectangular nave and the inside roof with its tranverse beams, all in Gothic Cistercian style, go back to this epoch.

The relics of St. Catherine are here as are the stained glass windows of not many decades ago, a mix of old and new.

I was impressed by the gothic style and also to see the head of St Catherine, preserved! It was quite eerie but at the same time wonder how it could look so preserved. Really lovely church and it is free to get in.

If the building didn't represent a church it could easily be a power house or a commanding post in war. Perched at the top of the hill, it's a laborious climb uphill. We didn't climb up due to my arthritis but the views from below...More

Not a great deal to see or do inside. It was nice that there was supposed to be silence and no photography. Peaceful.

Our hotel was very close to the Basilica and we walked past it every day during our stay so we decided to stop in. There is no fee to go in but it was a nice quiet little church to explore. If you are in...More

This ancient "Basilica" preserves the spoils of Saint Caterina of Siena, the protectress of the town, the region and of Italy as well. Inside you can admire as well many fine art works from the 12-13th century. The entrance is FREE so if you have...More

It is a huge church, but it is not very impressive/ attractive in comparison to all the beauty that can be found in this part of Italy. Still it is a different Christian order and thus interesting to see, but it is not a must...More

This basilica houses the head and thumb of St. Catherine. It has many other beautiful altars and artworks as well. There is a small gift shop in the basilica.

Impressive but somewhat cold and austere basilica. The way it's outside is towering over the city is more impressive than the interior.

Since the Basilica is going through reconstruction, it was difficult to appreciate this large and simple Basilica. Additionally, no photography is allowed (which I usually use to help my memory of a place we visit). They do have the relic of the head of Saint...More
