- J&S_SingaporeSingapore, Singapore4,332 contributionsa World Heritage Site by UNESCO.Square of Miracles also formally known as Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square), is a walled area located in Pisa or Tuscany. Well recognized as important Medieval art and the finest architectural complexes in the world it draws millions of locals & tourists to its attractions. The square is famous for the 4 great religious edifices: the Pisa Cathedral, the Pisa Baptistry, the Campanile, and the Camposanto Monumental. We visited in a tour group end-Nov and it was drizzling the whole morning, dousing much fun. The square is surrounded by a beautiful green lawn where tourists and locals were seen lying down and relax in the amazing setting, amid the rain?! There are also pillars and one with the stature of she-wolves & the 2 Rs symbolising Roma. People were posing interestingly to get the Leaning Tower in their views. The Cathedral, Baptistery & Cemetery found in the piazza have been considered central to the locals religious life, symbolizing the main stages of a human life: the Baptistery represents birth, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta life and the Camposanto,to death. One needs to pay and queue to go into all the 4 buildings. With the limited time we visited the Camposanto and were rewarded with the visit and left impressed. There are a few cafes and alfresco dining but we chose the familiar MacDonald’s nearby for a quick meal. Crowd came in throngs just after 1pm and time for us to move on.. a memorable trip indeedVisited November 2022Written 23 December 2022

The White Marble, the well-kept grounds, the grass, the relaxing people, and the Tower, Church, and Baptistry, are stunning. Late afternoon, when the sun is hitting the buildings at a more direct sideways angle, it is pretty amazing. Well worth the crazy traffic, roadblocks, and such to get there.Visited May 2022Written 27 February 2023

Very busy, a stressful feeling, not pleasant at all. This time there was a lot of people in the Piazza, but no salesmen, just quiet and peaceful. That made the place much more beautiful – it is one of its kind!Visited August 2022Written 28 March 2023
- Sarah LLondon, United Kingdom3,027 contributionsStunning at sunsetLoved the afternoon I spent here. The atmosphere is electric. I can imagine without the sun shining it might not be the greatest experience but, it really does let you bask in the shadows of the amazing architecture around you. Also, truly beautiful at sunset. It can get very busy so try going very early in the morning for fewer crowds.Visited April 2023Written 12 April 2023

People were bumping into each other, we lost people constantly in the crowd and all that for maybe 15 minute talk about different buildings. I would recommend to go outside the season if that is even an option. It was nice to see cultural landmark, but again if you can go outside the season.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 October 2023

Well you're here to go up the tower so have no option but to walk here. Wish I could say something which would make it sound better than it's a route to the tower. Enough said.

Among the "6 sites" spread out all over this "long rectangular" square (with its most prominent site which I'm sure is the 1st site for most visitors to the square), according to my "sequence of choice" were: the Leaning Tower with "2 levels" above but yes much better views from the "top outdoor" one (both with a 360-degree "far view" consisting of flat landscapes & mountains and with a nice "down-below view" of this square where the best for a photo-op in my opinion is "with the domes" above the Pisa Cathedral right beside the tower), and where also to see on the top level itself are a number of bells, and where yes my "only caution" is for the way down the spiral staircase with "somewhat slippery" steps just due to their smooth surfaces; the Pisa Cathedral with its interior fairly spacious and also elaborate not much for the presence of interior structures (apart from the altar) but for the presence of some "beautiful paintings"; the Baptistery (an impressive-looking cylindrical-shaped structure although not much is there to see inside except for like a small stage in the middle & some beautiful stained-glass windows around); the Camposanto Monumentale where I was actually quite amazed by these "huge wall paintings" along the two length-side corridors of that big rectangular building where there are also "quite a number" of tombs (both alongside the corridors & under the floors) and some stone sculptures; the east-side museum with two floors of religion-related displays & an "inner courtyard" with a corridor lined with statues, but where the best about that museum for me is its location "right beside" the Leaning Tower (for a pretty good up-close view of the Tower from both the balcony above & the courtyard below and somewhat different from seeing the Tower from outside the museum); and the south-side museum also with "huge wall scenes" as at the Camposanto (the 4th site as just mentioned) but these ones more faded in "just about sketches" compared to those in like full depictions.
And also, not one of the sites on the Piazza itself (like the ones mentioned above), but located right beside it on its west & north sides is the "city wall" for a nice-but-not-too-high view of the Piazza especially from the west side for a "whole-length" view (from the Baptistery near the west end to the Leaning Tower near the east end with the Pisa Cathedral in the middle) although not much else is there to see from up there (except some "sizeable cemetery" at one area right outside the wall); and also can be done is a walk above the wall along the north side for something like 1.5 km (which I just did a small fraction of due to being late in the day).
And so, it was a pretty good deal I would say for the all-inclusive ticket costing about 30 Euros (except for the wall which was a separate ticket but also a pretty reasonable one), and yes my "time slot" at 10 30 am for the Leaning Tower was just about the right time to get started and to get all the sites done by the day's end (given just a very short distance to get from one site to another while going around the Piazza).

A busy square full of tourists doing tourist things, pushing up the tower etc. some shops and sales but mostly just the old buildings. Street sellers are banned from the area and the local police do a good job of keeping it that way. Makes it a very pleasant area. Cafe and restaurants are just a stone’s throw away but the square itself is unspoilt. You can buy tickets for the museums and tower also in the tourist info building. Some grassed areas are kept clear but some you are allowed to sit on and there is plenty of shaded seating places.

A must visit place in Pisa and not only the famous leaning tower, the surrounding castles and buildings are all very nice and spectacular as if history comes alive and you tend to witness the test of time of these building structures.
Known as Campo dei Miracoli (or The Square of Miracles) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square is made up of an area that is partly paved and partly neatly trimmed lawns and some of the most famous buildings in Pisa are found on this square. The three buildings (Baptistery, Cathedral, Hospital) and the Cemetery are said to represent the four stages of human.
The place is full of visitors and just outside the entrance is the flea street with several makeshift stalls selling local souvenirs and products, with some restaurants, cafes, fast food restaurant and a mini-supermarket.
Visitors can walk freely around the area but need to purchase tickets to enter the buildings.

This is a very beautiful piazza, well maintained with lots to see. There's not just the Leaning Tower, but also the Duomo, Battistero, Cemetery, etc. It's a nice setting with manicured lawns, large walls and a market just outside the gates. We took a guided tour to give us the background and history.

If you are going to visit Pisa, you are going to want to visit this wonderful medieval piazza. There are 3 other important monuments besides the leaning tower, the cathedral, the Baptistery and a cemetery. Curiosly, a famous Italian writer called this "lawn of miracles" in one of his works and the name stuck. The official name is actually piazza del Duomo.

Just visiting the square.. do I need tickets ?
fm_opapisa
Pisa, Italy
Please visit our official website (ITA/ENG) and you get all the information you may need for organising the visit.
you need the ticket if you want to visit our monuments and museums.
Instead you don’t need the ticket to watch from outside and walk the square, of course.
If you would like any further information, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

If you just want to walk in and see the Tower and take photos, what are the hours for that? Same as when the Tower itself is open? Can you just walk around the plaza before the tower opens?

Hi there, I too love in Sidcup and we're going to Pisa in two weeks time for three nights. I've just booked the tower but was wondering if you had any tips for travelling to other local places by bus? We're thinking of Florence but your advice would be great please? Cheers, Karen

Hi Karen!
Go by train to Florence is my advice, we did that. It’s quick. Take a bus just outside the wall in Pisa to Lucca, a beautiful little town you don’t want to miss! If you like Puccini, this town has a Puccini museum in the apartment the family lived in. Lucca has also amazing churches. It has a fantastic oval square that is built on a former Roman amphitheater. The town has also a charming wall which is wide enough to walk on it. It’s full of trees and it’s very peaceful to take a walk on it.
Hope you will enjoy your time in these cities.

You need about 30 min to walk inside the building and to have a look around. You have to buy a ticket which is valuable for the other places as well. It is not very expensive, but I can not remember the ticket price. Have fun, it is worth seeing it! Regards Daniel

Assolutamente no piazza Cavallotti.
