The square has the shape of an irregular quadrilateral, with a double arched loggia, supported by sandstone columns. The sixteenth-century portico, that runs along the four sides, was built by the "Opera del Duomo". Formerly it was known as "Piazza del Grano" (wheat) or "Piazza dei Porci" (meat) as it was the place where the food and meat market took place and it has never changed its original function ever since. It was located in a very lively neighbourhood, but it did not have the current appearance. From the eighteenth century, the square took the name of "Vettovaglie", from the sale of various foods, and it was equipped with a fountain. Piazza delle Vettovaglie is today one of the most popular places for young people, students from the nearby university and the Pisans themselves who, especially in the evening, flock to the numerous clubs, small cafes, restaurants and pubs and enjoy food, wines and aperitifs. It is the centre of the university's nightlife. The square is quite nice and the portico has a lovely shape.

Just off the Borgo Stratto this little square has a few cafes and pizza places. A very small market operates - it seemed to specialise in hats. Curious. A little lacking in atmosphere but easy to get to and enjoy its quaint setting.
