The Serchio river is the third in Tuscany region in length, the second in medium flow, the first in flow in drought. All this means that it is never really dry: a minimal amount of water, even in the central months of summer, flows into its bed. In short, it is the least "Mediterranean" of the great rivers of Tuscany. This occurs thanks to the rocks of its basin, which are limestone or in any case rather permeable, so they imbibe considerable quantities of water, which they then gradually release.
It is therefore to be expected that a walk along its banks - as is the one allowed by the River Park - will be pleasant. The water body is never truly immobile, and the (rare) transverse banks erected to regulate the stream offer a show of clear and pouring waters, suitable for the life of many species of fish.
We have recently traveled that part of the River Park which consists of the pedestrian path of the embankment between "Ponte San Pietro" and the elegant, recent cable-stayed pedestrian bridge that was built at the height of the shooting gallery. We did it as part of the "Via Francigena" path, which between Camaiore and Lucca provides for the passage here.
It is a stretch of about 3 Kms, which allows the observation of spontaneous flora as well as crops (of course apart of the river stream).
Frequent explanatory panels illustrate the flora and fauna in the area.
However, I consider the attractiveness of this path to be good, not exceptional. Maybe also because we did it in the winter season, when the trees are bare.

I'd been taken on it by some locals, then did it again in reverse. On the far side of the river Serchio from Lucca is a river path through a nature reserve/country park. We walked a round trip over the footbridge accessed via via Cavaletti, along the river and then back into the city over a road bridge. Several kilometers, very peaceful and lots to look at if you like a bit of nature. Cafe on the way back in.
