Small but amazing church

It's a small church when compared to others but I really enjoyed climbing the bell tower and exploring the ruins underneath the church. Well worth visiting

We bought a combo ticket, which also includes the San Martina Cathedral & tower nearby. The main attraction for me was the excavation underneath the church floor which you can climb down and walk through. There is an audio tour available--we didn't use it.

There are in this little town about twelve churchs, all with a very nice architecture, and this medieval church San Giovanni, offers concerts of Puccini, very nice tower, and her construction is on an ancient roman villa.

The 12th century church itself is small but worth a quick visit. It is the excavated ruins under the floor of the entire church that is the draw for anyone who likes archaelological remains. The ruins of the church of St. Reparata, which was built in the 4th century, was the 1st cathedral in Lucca until the 8th century. There... More

You can visit the church, wander round the paved underground walkways down in the basement where there are ruins and insights into history back to Roman times. The church also includes notable murals, sculptures and the chance to climb the vertigo inducing bell tower. Open metal stair treads and open hand rails. Looking uo it isvery M.C. Escher.

As with all Italian towns, Lucca is full of wonderful churches. This one is no exception and it also houses a crypt where they have carried out an archaeological dig and uncovered many remains of the previous buildings on the site. Buy a combination ticket for this church, the bell tower and St. Martin's Cathedral.

This is where the Puccini Festival runs every day, just across the street from the Dom. The inside is practically without colour and it is quite dark inside even on a sunny day so it's hardly worth a special visit - look in over when you come to the Festival in the evening (every evening of the year!)

The Puccini festival is held in this church, but even if you are not into Puccini, this is a magnificent place to visit. The excavations under the church reveal four phases in it history with interpretations in Italian, English and French. Audio guides are available.

I went inside this church expecting to see another standard interior but this one has a lot of archeological finds and structures therefore worth the visit

Worth the visit. Get entry with one ticket to this church, the cathedral and the museum. This church was my favorite of the 3. Climb the bell tower for great views of Lucca. The stairs are easy to climb and it's not nearly as tall as the tower in Florence. The best part is the excavations under the church. They... More
