This was a new experience, and a good one. Once you get to the centre then there are these winding streets and beautiful, old houses that are so typical of Italian cities. Beautiful cathedrals but we only looked at them from the outside – it bothers me to pay for getting into a church. Long winding shopping streets and a wonderful square made up from the center of an ancient amphitheatre, the old stands converted into houses ages ago.

Lucca is a great medieval town, one of the most beautiful and interesting I have ever visited. With its remarkable Romanesque churches, the wall, its narrow streets and the amphitheater now turned into a square with restaurants, it was definitely worth a visit.

I had less than one day in Lucca, but that was not enough for this charming town. There is so much to see, that in one day you'll only get a rough idea about what Lucca has to offer.
The historical centre of Lucca is absolutely charming and surprising - something to see behind every corner. The old town is full of life, shops, restaurants, churches, narrow streets and historical sights.
One of the main attractions is the old wall from 16th century. Nowadays it is over 4 kilometres long walkway. It is one of the most complete fortifications in Italy.
There are also about 100 churches, of which I visited only Duomo which construction begun during the 11th century. It's interior, especially the floor, resembled a little bit of Siena's magnificent Duomo's floor. It is not as big as Siena's Duomo and does not have as much art, but also Lucca's Duomo has interesting paintings, sculptures e.g. Ilaria del Carretto’s Tomb by Jacopo della Quercia. Another huge church is San Michele in Foro in the centre of Lucca.
Do not miss miss Amphitheatre Square which is from Roman times. The buildings - all different heights and colours - have been built around the original elliptical structure. There are many restaurants, cafes and shops there.
Lucca is also famous for several historical towers of which Torre Guinigi is perhaps most famous. It was created in the 14th century and has garden and Holm Oak trees at the very top. You can climb to the top, but I did not do that due to limited time I had.
And do not miss Puccini's childhood home which now is a museum telling about the life and work of one of the most famous Italian composers.

The historic center of Lucca is not huge but suggestive, certainly worth a long walk. You come across enchanting views between the towers, doors, churches and walls.
One of the most beautiful cities in Tuscany.

Everything is worth visiting in Lucca. Even turning at random, without precise goals, you go from one wonder to another. It takes good legs and days with little tourism, since, in our opinion, the less we are the better off we are. Take your time and nerves, you will see things that you humans cannot imagine.

The historic center of Lucca is still enclosed by Renaissance walls and has therefore maintained an ancient soul. Rich in monuments and churches it is pleasant to visit.
