As you pass through the portal toward Piazzale Michelangelo, there is a sign “Central Storico di Firenze, Patrimonio dell'Umanità” This section of the wall and gate were constructed in 1320 and led to the Basilica di San Miniato. It is unique in that there is no gate tower. On the Florence side of the tower, are the remnants of the stairs the guards took to their station. On the outer wall on either side of the gate are 2 coats of arms; one is the City of Florence the other Lily and the Cross. WARNING - Be careful walking through the gate, it is a very narrow one-lane road, just about enough room for a car, let alone a car and pedestrian.
