These were very nice people, with lots of beautifully crafted artworks for sale.
Unfortunately, one should know going in that it can be nearly impossible to obtain a refund for the huge taxes that tourists don't really owe but are charged for anyway.
In one sense that is obviously a failing on the part of a poorly run government, but Pitti Mosaici is very familiar with this problem and is still not honest about it.
They go to great lengths to explain the refund process and provide paperwork without ever mentioning that it is unlikely to do any good at all.
They did make a token effort to assist us in this matter but then simply gave up and made clear they weren't terribly concerned about it since they already have our money.

I love the beautiful pietra dura works of art that you can see and their catalogue is kind of mind blowing: antic design of the Medici Period immaculately taken back to life. It is true that everything is hand made but unfortunately not in Florece! There are only few artisans left in Florence (and find them is really hard) but most of the pieces in the catalogue of Pitti Mosaici are commissioned outside Florence, outside Italy, outside Europe...great craftsmanship but not made in Italy!

Hello Travelaround59,
thank you for visiting us in Pitti Square. We are glad you love and understand the ancient florentine technique of Pietra Dura Inlay and thanks for appreciating our unique handmade artworks.
It is true indeed that only very few workshops of Pietra Dura are left in Florence - three major ones to be precise - and we, Pitti Mosaici (owned by De Filippis family), are one of them. We understand you had no chance to visit our workshop and to see our artists at work. We hope to meet you again in Florence and to show you our world!
Best regards,
Pitti Mosaici

We stopped in because of the lovely displays of pietre dure art in the windows, and ended up buying a small piece depicting Palazzo Vecchio. The frame for it was marred, so the saleswoman closed up the shop and took us across the street around the corner to the workshop to find a replacement. It was an amazing workshop: three men were diligently cutting tiny pieces of marble and other rocks to build up an image of a bridal bouquet. We were impressed by the artistry and by the effort to preserve this art form.

We crossed the street from the Pitti Palace, visited this store, and met Eleonora who was most helpful, friendly and courteous. No high-pressure sales, just willing to answer any question we had. She even offered to take us to the workshop around the corner. The replicas of the inlay tables are fabulous.
However, this shop is for the well-heeled buyer/collector.

Even without the art the building alone is awesome. Although I don't find it that nice looking on the outside it's spectacular inside. The incredibly high, painted ceilings with spectacular mouldings and reliefs. Then there's the paintings, you'll need hours and hours to really see them all. Pick a rainy day if possible and spend the day.

We stopped in with our guide because the store caught our eye. As stated in another review, beautiful and worth seeing if mostly for the well-heeled collector. Would visit again just to look and be reminded what the best looks like !!

Located across the Arno from the Ponte Vecchio, and directly across from the Pitti Palace, the Pitti Mosaici houses magnificent treasures of "painting" using multicolored stones. The results are three dimensional masterpieces. In luck you may see an artisan working on a piece or commission. Unfortunately with the quality, the pricing can be a King's ransom, but looking is free. ...

Did not know about this renaissance mosaic technique until I happened to read about it in "Innocents Abroad" by Mark Twain. So I get to Florence and chance upon the gallery in front of the Pitti Palace.....I was blown away by the craftsmanship. I commissioned a pendant which now proudly hangs around my neck...it is beyond beautiful.
The work is awesome, all done by hand, the artisans are true artists, the staff is friendly. Ask for lovely Luce, who graciously gave me a tour of the workshop and explained the process to me. I cannot wait to commission another piece. When in Florence, GO!
