Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

Very simple small church located across the way from Dante’s ‘house.’ It’s historic ties to Dante put it in the radar for many visitors. When inside, be sure to see the suggestive painting with Dante, the basket full of notes of those seeking ‘romantic’ assistance and the 1966 flood’s high water mark. Unless you’re here to pray, you’ll be in/out in under ten minutes.

The very old small church where Dante's family attended and where he first saw Beatrice. Unfortunately crowded with noisy high-schoolers who were not quieted by their teacher or group leader. Girls putting love-locks outside on church sign. Really?

This TINY church dates back to 1032 and is often referred to as Dante's church. It is across the street and a couple steps away from the Museo Casa Di Dante. It is said to be the place where Dante first laid eyes on Beatrice. The (unlikely actual) burial place of Beatrice Portinari is in the church and you can light a "candle" at her grave or leave a note to her asking her intercession for matters of the heart. (The basket is overflowing)
This is a convenient along the way stop between the Uffizi/Piazza della Signoria/Palazzo Vecchio and the The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (duomo). Set off on the street across from Neptune and head toward the Via Dante Allegheri.
One caveat, the posted hours are not accurate. I had to go back 3 times to find it open.

As Dan Brown writes in his novel Inferno, Dante's church is hard to find, but not impossible. Although it is known as Dante's Church it is listed as Chiesa di Santa Margherita, so when looking for it on maps and such, look for it under this name. It is there flanked by two taller buildings on a narrow street noticed only by the little pointed roof above the door, the sounds of beautiful classical music eminating from within, and an open doorway that reveals the pews and lets you know you've found it. It is a very small, plain chapel with a picture of Dante on one wall and a painting of what I think is Beatrice's wedding to another man on another. Beatrice was Dante's one and only love and inspiration for many of his writings. The chapel is dimly lit, so it is a quiet place to sit and reflect, relax and imagine Dante as a 9 year old boy coming to this chapel. Picture taking is allowed, but if you put a euro in the light box located near the entrance on the left side of the chapel, the alter will illuminate making it easier to see and to take pictures.

We are enjoying a whole month in Florence so have had the time to walk past this church at various times morning and afternoon on five different days of the week. We found it closed each time, with no sign or other indication anywhere about opening times. Today I inquired at the Tourist Office (opposite the station) and was told it was closed for restoration. Dante is almost synonymous with Florence and for Dante lovers, or anyone just interested in early mediaeval Florence, it's a big attraction. Would it be so difficult for whoever is in charge to put a sign on the door advising that it's closed and when it is expected to open!

I happened upon Dante's church after a nice dinner in Florence. I have to admit I wouldn't have thought to go inside, except my sister-in-law writes a travel blog about Florence and I had read about this church in one of her postings. It is interesting to see the little shrine to unrequited love, but other than that, this church is small and dark. Something interesting to see if you're a Dante fan or just in the area!

We were on a walkabout without any special target, and happened to get down the street with this church. We nearly passed it, when something struck me: This is the church from the Dan Brown - Inferno book!
In we went, and just the sheer age of the place is amazing.
So a nearly hidden gem, where you get struck by history when entering. Amazing.

By comparison with other great churches of Firenze, the Chiesa di Santa Margherita is on the small side and far less 'grand' but is nevertheless worth exploring. It is very centrally located, a short walk from the Palazzo Vecchio and is famous for its associations with Dante who was a regular visitor here.

This church is also known as the Dante and Beatrice's church, being the place where Dante first met her at the age of nine. The church is across the street from Casa di Dante Museum, being one quiet place for those who want to say a prayer (next to Beatrice Portinari's tomb there is a basket for letters for her). There is not a very big entrance, or many tourists around, so be very careful when you are searching for this church.

I stumbled on this place signposted down a tiny alleyway between the Piazza del Duomo and Piazza Signoria. Unlike the massive churches in Florence, it wasn't packed with art (or tourists). It was tiny, humble, and beautiful. I loved Beatrice's simple tomb with a single rose laid across it. People were coming to pray and it was calm and lovely- a world away from the tourist whirlpool in Santa Croce and the Duomo. So glad I came across this beautiful place.

Buongiorno,

I am going to visit Florence in May, for the second time.
How easily reached from the Duomo to the Chiesa di Santa Margherita dei Cerchi? When open for visitors?
Thanks in advance
