Loved Florence but the crowds, oh the crowds. One thing I didn't like was having to queue up for ages just to purchase tickets then queue up again once you have got tickets. Gelate ice cream expensive. Five days including the flight there and back was enough for us, any longer would have been too much.

This is one of the masterpiece sculptures found within Loggia dei Lanza at Piazza della Signoria. It is the work of Benvenuto Cellini (1545-54). What you see is a bronze figure of Perseus raising the head of Medusa whom he has just slain in his left hand while holding blade in his right hand. Perseus is also seen standing over the lifeless body of Medusa. The statue is upon a decorative pedestal with bronze reliefs depicting the story of Perseus and Andromeda.

Note that you can see a couple of draft sculptures of Perseus on display within Museo National di Bargello if this particular sculpture strikes interest in you. Cellini used these to prepare for the masterpiece sculpture that you see at Loggia dei Lanza.

It is great to be able to see this statue for free as it is on public display near the Uffizi gallery. Beautyful work of art.

It is amazing to see such a masterpiece in its original available in a public space for visitors to see. It is a stand out statue in the square.

In front of the Palazzo Vecchio lies a covered area with multiple statues and one of them holds this Statue of Perseus holding Medusa's head. To those fans of mythology, this is an iconic moment for them and so it holds special meaning seeing it in person.

Access has been restricted - I think the public were allowed to enter the Loggia before but that appears to be stopped now possibly due to the pandemic. Still, it's easy enough to take photos & admire the art from the Piazza a few steps below.

This is one of many beautiful statues in and around this piazza, each one amazing. But take a good look at this one, give it its due, feel what the artist was trying to convey, imagine the historical period, the political scene... take it all in, if you can.

I love this statue. What made it better for me is that I wasn't looking for it and didn't know it was there. For years, I looked at this statue on the cover of Edith Hamilton's _Mythology_(1940) never imagining that I would be standing in front of it one day. As he holds up Medusa's head, we may overlook her dead body beneath him.
