The Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale or National Central Library of Florence is just that - a library. To enter during most hours you have to have a specific card that I expect only residents of Florence can apply for and obtain. For a couple of hours on Saturdays you may be able to book a tour, but it may be in mostly Italian depending on who the guide is. At one time, the library held a copy of every book published in Tuscany, but a flood in 1966 damaged approximately 1/3 of the library's collection. Many of these works were saved by the "Mud Angels" a team of volunteers that worked tirelessly to clean and dry all of the damaged works. It is the largest library in Italy and one of the most important in Europe and located along the banks of the Arno river. Unfortunately since we visited during a weekday, we were not able to enter and had to admire the exterior of the building rather than marvel at the works inside.

Don’t even bother going out of your way to visit this place unless you happen to be in the area and want to take a peek at the building. We had no idea what this place was but it was highlighted as a significant building in the Accord tour guide map we received from our Airbnb host so we figured we might as well pop inside while we were around the area. I was looking forward to it since the building is beautiful and I love libraries, but as you can see where this is going... we couldn’t!

We tried to enter as the building looked nice and I wanted to just peek inside and perhaps escape some heat. We tried and tried to go inside but couldn’t figure it out. I don’t think it is even open anymore.

We were told by two reliable sources, the main tourist office of Florence and a certified tour guide that we could go into the Bibioteca to see the Grande Salone, or main reading room. We did not want to walk all the way over there if this wasn't possible. Once at the door we were told NO Entrance in a real power trip bureaucratic manner that was unnecessarily harsh. I understand that a library is not on most folks travel itinerary but it's an important place in Florence's cultural history and many American students helped after the flood of 1966 to clean up the mess of mud and destroyed books, plus we love libraries and search them out wherever we find ourselves. This was a first, and left a very unpleasant impression. Now I need to inform my two reliable sources not to encourage others to go there unless armed with iron clad credentials which no one who wants to visit this iconic library one time would bother to apply for.

Walked all the way here only to be told that we could not enter unless we were students. Asked if being a university student from Singapore counts but the counter staff said no. What a bummer. So much for "knowledge is for all" and Florence being one of the great cities of knowledge.

We did not go inside as we passed it by on our way to the church of Sanata Croce but the monumental building looks impressive.

Just walked past this place and took a peak inside. Not worth visiting but the building is huge and great example of Florence architecture.

Went by on the bus tour and then went there on a Sunday not realizing it was a Sunday, and it was closed, but I must say the building is a spectacular sight. Best across the Arno if you want to get it all in.
