    Beautiful square in Florence
This is a beautiful vibrant square in Florence surrounded by cafes and restaurants. On the edge is the imposing Basilica of Santa Maria Novella's with a Renaissance facade. This piazza was born in 1287. It has two marble obelisks, and sitting ontop four bronze turtles. We started our walking tour from these obelisks.

    Florence’s overlooked square?
Located a stone’s throw away from Florence’s main railway station, this piazza is often overlooked by visitors as there is nothing notable here, other than its namesake Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. The first thing that captures your attention as you approach this square is the enchanting beauty of the church’s Renaissance facade. Although often subdued by the more illustrious Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Signoria, the square refused to back down. Capitalising on its spacious site, which is crowned by 2 marble obelisks, each topped with a Florentine lily, it continues its tradition from its inception in the late 13th century by playing hosts to many fairs, events and festivals throughout the year.

Where you find Basilica di Santa Maria Novella
This is a fairly large public square in the Historic Centre of Florence that has been around since the Middle Ages. It takes present name the major basilica situated at the the north end. It is also due south of the Santa Maria Novella Rail Station which many will use to arrive into the city. Thus, it is very likely that you will pass by Piazza di Santa Maria Novella either while sightseeing or around arrival/departure time by rail. Piazza di Santa Maria Novella is a mostly rectangular shaped. It is a pedestrian only area these days and lined with cafes & bars with alfresco seating as well as a handful of hotels. You will findnice views of the Basilica facade to the north from many locations within the square. To the south is Museo Novecento and note the fun pair of Turtle obelisks situated on opposite sides. These are worth a look-see when passing by.

This is a real big square in front of a real. Big church. I didn’t like this one that much because there is no defined space for walking versus driving and it felt unsafe. Also the surrounding buildings weren’t as nice as some other squares.

This rather spacious square is located near the train station and hosts the basilica with the same name. When we visited, there was a local food market on the square. If you are nearby, and even if you are not planning to enter the basilica, it might be worth a detour to see what’s going on at the square.

This is a lovely square not far from the train station. A very pleasant place to sit in one of the many cafes and restaurants, and do some people watching.

The Piazza Santa Maria Novella is one of the most charming squares in central Floreance.
Of course, the 13th-15th century Dominican Basilica of Santa Maria Novella's Renaissance facade is the most impressive.
But also the Hospital of San Paolo (now the Novecento Museum) is awesome.
There are several restaurants ariound the square, which make it worth to stay here for a while and enjoy the surroundings.

Situated not far from the train station, this large, roughly pentagon-shaped piazza has a number of hotels, restaurants, and stores around the perimeter with some vendors during the day. There is also a taxi stand of sorts at the south end that always have one or two waiting for customers. The park-like setting (there is more green here than in a typical piazza) is a good place to sit an admire the basilica, enjoy a gelato, or just watch the world go by. We always felt very safe here - people around no matter what time of the day or night.
