We were walking around this piazza and didn't realise that there was a church here as the front looks like other buildings in the square. We went in and it was a beautiful church with ornate decorations in gilt edging and wonderful paintings on the ceiling.

We stumbled upon this beautiful church near the Accademia Gallery and were so impressed by the gold and carved ceiling. The many side chapels were equally beautiful as was the organ pipes. There was no entrance fee. Being off-season, there were not many tourists. Beware of pickpockets; there was an attempt to pickpocket us as we exited.

Few tourists have the opportunity to see the Cappella di San Luca at Santissima Annunziata. I was fortunate to hear a recital there as a part of the Sacro/Profano Festival this year, hosted by Salon/Sanctuary Concerts. This chapel is not easy to visit otherwise, but it is not impossible to arrange a visit by writing in advance. It belongs to... More

Easily missed with very few visitors this is a beautiful working church. You enter via the atrium which is covered by many frescoes dating from the 16th century ( many are in poor condition). The main church is a little dark but look up and you will see a breathtaking ceiling frescoes. Small highly decorated chapels radiate from main church.... More

A stunning church, with no queues and no crowds. Well worth a visit and make sure you visit it when you go to the Museo degli Innocenti which is in the same square. Have a drink on the top floor. Lovely view over the duomo and the synagogue

Get away from the crowds and check this church out. No line, no cost and stunning. Nice square outside as well, and great history to the place.

The inside is a big surprise - very impressive, more so than many more famous basilicas and churches. Close to Acedemia museum and Museo Son Marco.

When you go to see the Galleria del'academia and visit the San Marco basilica and museum, take a short detour through this church. This Basilica might not look like much from the outside but the inside outshines del'Fiore and most churches I've been to (which is a lot). The interior is nothing short of magnificent, there is not a blank... More

The Basilica della Santissima Annunziata - Chiesa di Santa Maria della Scala is another lovely Church in Florence. It's not as well known as some of the other popular tourist attractions, but it's full of really beautiful works of rt. Recommended!

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The pleasant atmosphere of this residential area, a stone’s throw away from the Duomo of Florence, surprises everyone. A continuous flow of backpacking students provides the tranquil surroundings for the elderly residents who sit in Piazza San Marco to read the daily newspaper. Home to several universities, including the Academy of Fine Arts, San Marco is one of the most vibrant cultural centers in the city. A bridge connecting the modern cultural activity of Florence to its classic art, represented by the everlasting magnificence of the original David, resonates as a symbol of Florence and of Italy as a whole. Get lost in a Neoclassic world, a journey back in time through historic buildings like Spedale degli Innocenti (Hospital of the Innocents), San Marco church, Basilica della Santissima Annunziata, and natural jewels like the Botanical Gardens.
